Not trying to point the finger at anyone in general, but that’s what would happen ;).

Her grandmother who thankfully gave up driving about 10 years ago only put 25 k miles on her 1997 or 98 Lincoln Mark VIII:).

Last time I took it to the dealer they said “Man, you drive this a lot:ROFLMAO::LOL::ROFLMAO::LOL:”.

So if a tax were to be levied on lack of use, I know her grandmother on social security would have given up the ghost a few years earlier and saved a few thousand miles on the Lincoln(y).

If you are factoring in commercial vehicles with personal ones in their own class.

Having a mileage tax will be argued the same as having a flat income tax. Everyone feels entitled and thinks the other guys should pay more.

Actually, I've changed my position on mileage taxes.
It's simple to do if you have a three-digit IQ, and it sticks the majority of the road fees on people who commute the most.
Maybe some people will even use HOV lanes for something unheard of.....like.....High Occupancy or something instead of a stealth express land for higher wage earners.

Of course...they will still keep taxing the crap out of gas, so it's a win-win for dot.gov.

    Fortunately?
I live 3 miles from work and I have 2 motorcycles.

    Not my fight.
    ;)

$289,000,000 a year is levied on 600,000 electric customers for
    municipal substation tax
    https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.newsday.com/amp/long-island/lipa-tax-challenge-substations-1.26354926

This tax is charged per kilowatt hour

    Gasoline cars avoid this tax...

So Gasoline cars do not contribute to this tax by avoiding electric use,
To make up for lost electric taxes that each gas car avoids
Gas car owners must pay an additional $150 a year which seems fair at the expected usage levels, cause after all an electric customer typically has to pay $450 a year in tax so it’s a bargain

The only issue with mileage taxes is that the powers that be seem to want to use GPS trackers for it. Yeah, most of us already have our phones and cars already doing this, but it is another thing when it is government doing it.
Then the GPS method has additional costs, and potential graft coming on with the tech supplier.

Mileage tax proposals annoy me. I drive out of state a lot. So will Illo'corruption charge me state tax on miles driven out of state, where that state mileage tax would be cheaper? Or would i need to keep a log of my out of state miles and pay taxes to those states? Seems like an undue burden for a personal vehicle.

    "$1,000 registration fee for EVs"
"it will bring in an estimated $2.4 billion in annual funding"
"There were 15,000 registered EVs in Illinois as of last month"

    Humm, let's do some math.

    $1,000 x 15,000 registered EVs ... That would be $15,000,000
    $2.4 billion - $15 million = $2.385 billion

What am I missing here???:confused::confused:

They could just tax churches and other exempt organizations such as the NRA. My goodness ... You could solve a whole lot of budget problems that way.

I'd be willing to let universities off the hook.

It's the churches and the NRA that I'd tax the bageebies out of.

But that's just me I guess.

I've been surprised how many posters on auto websites, drive 200-250+ miles a day. Some (numerous?) people working in the western Washington Seattle area, in order to get "out of the zoo", commute from Eastern Washington in their "safe, plush-mobile trucks", spraying 13(more?) gallons per day into the air. Same with other metro areas. Its nice to be in a Prius, but it doesn't take many people in "belch-mobiles" to off-set such. Many people don't care, because they deduct their mileage, "as an expense" or companies pay for vehicle mileage. Lots of people don't even know how many gallons per year they pump into the air, because they don't want to know or need to know.

Excessive flat fees that assume many annual miles and low fuel economy for the average ICE car are also an undue personal burden.

I'd offer a GPS tracker option, with higher fees to cover the increased overhead, for those that don't want to pay for miles driven out of state, but the proposal I brought up here is federal, so miles per state is a moot point.

I was unaware tax exempt status was enshrined in the Constitution.
