    Hi there,

I drive toyota prius 2011, gen 3. It has done. 286000 kms. 6 months ago i replaced the plugs cleaned the EGR elbow, which helped resolve the problem. The problem appeared again, this time it engine knocking was harder and violent I did the same checks and replaced the plugs, cleaned the EGR unit, intake manifold, this has subdued the problem. However i can still feel the engine vibration when im crusing at a constant speed or leave the acclerate after a reaching 50kms or more.

Can someone please suggest what could be wrong or what i have to do to fix this issue.

Is the coolant level in the engine coolant reservoir stable, not regularly requiring top up? Also, how was the EGR condition when you first cleaned it?

Reading more carefully: you mention you cleaned the EGR "elbow", would you mean just the stainless steel pipe going from intake manifold to EGR valve/cooler assembly? If so, you've left a lot to be cleaned: both the valve/cooler, and you really need to clean the intake manifold as well, paying particular attention to the small passages at each port: they feed EGR gasses into the intake ports.

Thank you for the response. Few days back i have cleaned complete EGR, changed the spark plugs and clean the intake manifold. I dont see any error code while i scannes the car nor there is any engine check light on dash board. I also spray cleaned the MAF sensor.

Oh ya, engine coolant is full.

After doing all the clean up engine knocking has reduced considerably but it hasnt stopped.

What else do i have to look at to fix this issue.

    Please suggeest

Have you cleaned or replaced the PCV valve?

Also, pay special attention to the 4 small EGR orifices in the intake manifold - they're easy to miss. Most people use pipe cleaners.

Other than that some fuel system cleaner can reduce the carbon buildup in the engine cylinders.

    Good luck

Did you remove and clean the EGR cooler or just the valve and tube? Are you using the correct Denso or NGK Iridium plugs?

Maybe work with a pro mechanic: talk to a few, see how they respond.

In a nutshell: a leak down test connects an air hose at spark plug hole, one cylinder at a time, while that cylinder is at top dead centre of compression stroke. The hose is pressurized and has a special gauge set for detection of various symptoms. Also, you can look and listen at various places, see where air may be escaping, draw conclusions.

Full disclosure: never done this myself.

The Waranty Enhancement Program notification we got from Toyota Canada (May 2017 SOSH-W11-1A) has the expression "rough idle and/or tapping noise from the HV transaxle at cold start due to a sticking EGR valve due to excess carbon build-up".

I'm fairly certain that you did not clean the EGR cooler. You know, pinching and disconnecting coolant hoses, reaching the unreachable nuts and studs…
