Walmart wants $95 per tire for installation. Sounds a bit pricey. Anyone know a good shop in South Orange County, CA?
That actually isn't too bad a price. Especially if it includes TBS sensors. Discount Tire, America's Tire and Just Tires are pretty similar in price. I know of a cheap independant place that you can get 4 new stock sized goodyear tires for around $220-245. Guadalajara Tire, Santa Ana. No frills. No fancy warrantees either. Without the details of the actual tire installation such as balancing, wheel kit & etc., we'll be throwing guesses out there like throwing darts at a target in the dark.
Call around. It sounds a bit high to me too. But then take the price of an identical tire and add in the installation charges to get the "real price". It might include other things......like a $5 per tire "disposal fee". Some places might advertise "free installation" but still charge for balancing, stems, etc. If there is a Sam's Club nearby, now might be a good time to consider a membership. They do most all of my tire work.......except for motorcycles, that is.
The walfarts around here charge $5 per tire for installation. Lifetime balance is $10 per tire. Is the extra $90 a california tax?

I think $95 is for the value tire package deal for 4 tires. It usually costs $25/tire, so it is a $5 discount. It includes road hazard insurance for $10 per tire. The basic installation is $15/tire which is about the same cost as most tire shops around me. Costco $0.01 installation sale is the best deal I have heard of, but we don't have Costco near me. There's a lot of shops in southbay calif. To save the mumbo-jumbo for all in all time money with non-extra surprises. Costco or Les Schwab is the way to go in where your standing at. I wouldn't go to any Wal-Mart for a tire especially for a reliable everyday car like a prius. The only thing youre gonna get in there is jack in box surprise in the end. After that you might wanna stop by to Earl Sheib car face wash change color for summer... By the way back in 2011, I bought a set of 4 Bridgestone tires at Costco. (its for a Saab 900 Convertible) I paid close to $400 everything. Its been 8 years now roughly I ran 60k miles and the tire is not even half of its life, I'm still going back there for a free tire rotation or flat fix with nitrogen air. What a beautiful city/sport tire. it grips and saves gas! Ended up getting the same tire for the '07 Prius and so far its just 6000+ miles seems like I'm getting the same experience like the other car.
Kal Tire is a nearby outfit for us. Pretty good place, but they can't resist: they're running ads right now, saying garanteed lowest price, find a lower price (Costco, for example), they'll match it. Last time I checked though, this was tire price only, and their install price was a about $10 per tire more. To be fair, that was a year or two back. Bottom line, tire purchases are like air line tickets (or concert tickets): there's the displayed cost, then they start hammering you with extras: install, balance, valve, environmental charge... Some places are at least more upfront about it, do the summary math for you. The ones that don't I tend assume don't for a reason.
Walfart DOES suck! You MUST watch them!!!!! I always do. They do NOT know how to use a torque wrench. They keep bouncing it. Idiots! And that's is being nice. And they are very slow. It's a 20 minute job that takes them over an hour. There are a few good guys there, but they are rare. If you find one, try to go there when they are there. I always re-torque to 76flbs. They go over 80, then 2 other people bound on the torque wrench raising it more. But I would watch any place, I do not trust them. But the recalls, you're stuck with them. If I do it, I KNOW it's done correctly. Unless I screw it up. But I don't trust my life or anyone else so someone who is only interested in money and could care less about my car.
Precisely the reason I'm shopping around. I have my own torque wrench, in case someone feels like making my life any more difficult. The last thing you need is a flat on the freeway and impossible lug nuts. If I had the equipment, I'd do the tires it myself.
