I just stopped by my local Toyota dealer, and they had a 2016 Prius Four Touring for $18,200. I think it looked great, the only problem is that it had 65,000 miles. It was a single owner, but he apparently drove it 5000 miles every 3 months. It looked like it had great service records, so I'm not worried about that.

I think this is a good deal, but I'm not 100% sure as I've never bought a car this new before. What does everyone else think?

I'd say it depends on what your anticipated use is going to be--how long do you intend to keep the car and how many miles do you drive/year? If you're a low-mileage user, then I wouldn't worry about the current miles. Prius can generally go 10 years and 200K total miles without major issues.

What do you think would be a fair price? I was thinking of asking them to lower it a bit just cause it seems I'm expected to haggle at dealers?

I think I'll be a closer to average user. Around 10-12k miles per year I'm estimating. The Prius's lasting for a long time as far as mileage goes is why I'm really considering this. Thanks for the info.

    welcome!
you always haggle, and they hope you don't.

best thing to do is look around and see what else is available. pricing is relative, and geographic.

you can also check kbb using your zip.

lastly, check around for pricing on a new comparable, again, you have to haggle, don't use msrp. easiest way is use a bunch of dealers websites. you can get an online price and haggle over the computer, no confrontation.

Yeah, I think I will try to haggle.

I checked KBB and their price is right in the middle of KBB's range for my area. Dealers in Tucson are around this pricing as well. There's some better deals in Tucson, but also worse deals, I believe. So I figure the one I'm looking at is right around the middle of the dealer range.

    Thanks for the info.

I plugged a 2016 Prius Touring Four with 65,000 miles in "good" condition and standard equipment into Kelly Blue Book web site and got between $15,831 and $17,826 for private party sales (in So Cal). So haggle away...

If you have the VIN, plug it into the Toyota Owners site to see what option packages it may have. Most of the safety features now standard on the Prius were only available in option packages in 2016.

As a reference point, I purchased a 2018 Two with under 11k miles last weekend from a dealer for just under $20k. I think the price they're offering the 2016 with 65k at is a bit high.

Don't forget sales tax, paperwork etc. they add onto the price.
It can quickly go over $20k

Haggle anyway. There's no way they'd set a price at the lowest level they'd be agreeable too; there's always some haggle room.

The miles are a negative. How do the tires look, for example. With those miles they're likely replacements already? Hows the tread depth? Are they all the same, and what make? Check under the hood, the underbody, all the nooks and crannies.

Hey guys, just wanted to say thanks for all the advice. I got them to knock the price down a little bit (not as much as I would've liked, though), and bought it already. I think it looks and drives well, so I'm pretty happy with it.
