Hey, things change.
Populations grow, people migrate. That's life on this planet.
I really have no problem with people that have lived or are living in California coming to Oregon. Growth IS going to happen one way or another.

The population growth is affecting Oregon, but Californian or otherwise it's going to happen.

I have traveled in my lifetime, actually seen a lot of the world around me. And in the end? I am a huge fan of Oregon. I love to return home. I love our distinct seasons, and our diverse environments, from Oceans, to Forests, Mountains, and Desert.
It's a testament to the success of Oregon, that it has become a favored destination of people looking for change.

I'm sincere when I say Welcome to Oregon. I think it's a great state.
If I hadn't been born here? If I didn't live here? I'd move here myself.

Next to Mat Kearney's song "Coming Home (to Oregon)," my next favorite is all the University of Oregon athletes performing "Shout" (thanks, Uncle Phil!!!) The best part starts at 3:45, but the opening part with Marcus as John Bulushi is great. And who can resist Puddles!!

 

Since I retired recently, got way too much time on my hands....anyway.

Hope the Duckies pull it together this year, best thing to happen to them was to get rid of Chip, but they have not seemed to recover.

Me, I am a Cougar fan (Washington State University), but somehow, my "Cougs" shirt from decades ago no longer fits....it musta shrunk....

 

Hey, like I said, I've been a Blazer fan since I was a kid in 1977. Decades of attending games.
Guess what?

It use to NOT happen.

I can remember going to games, and seeing Laker fans, wearing Laker jerseys, but in those days-70's 80's-90's and 2000's, they were too small a contingent or too respectful of their surroundings to actually be heard at the games.
It may be part of sports now, BUT I hate to say the influx of transplanted Californians has changed the in the arena dynamic.

I can't change it, but I hate to hear the NOT muffled ghost roar of Warrior fans...while I'm attending a Blazer home game. I can't change it, but I can tell you, it wasn't ALWAYS that way.

It's all just fun....Sports is entertainment. However, I really do feel, if you are going to put roots down in Oregon, Portland? You should respect the home team. If you're going to be an Oregonian but support The Warriors, Clipper or Lakers...do so covertly and quietly please.

Maybe with the passage of time, more of these transplanted Californians will become Blazer fans.

If you're not into sports, you're not into it.
But the Blazers being Oregon's and Portland's only true major league professional team, get followed and supported with an incredibly high level of devotion and attention.
I'm not into Soccer, but the Timbers and the Timbers Army, have been successful, and the fans seem to have a blast.

We have the collegiate level, with the Ducks and The Beavers. Some very successful and well supported teams. The respective allegiances to both The Ducks and The Beavers are taken very seriously.

We have some Minor League Baseball that has a pretty strong fan base.

Believe it or not...we have a Minor League baseball team, named after "Hops"...The Hillsboro Hops. Their mascot is a cartoon "Hop". I have yet to attend a game, but they have a strong fan base. And who isn't at least curious about a team whose mascot is a cartoon beer hop?

Portland is moving towards trying to obtain a Major League Baseball team.
Personally I think it would be very successful, and easily supportable. The timeline on when/if it happens is as of yet undefined.

No disrespect, but I have to admit I lean a bit more toward the ElectricMe on this issue.

Is it an Oregonian thing? Might be; I have heard variations of it before this mention. When I was in the nursing home, and I think it was because I was by far the youngest person there (and I think the sanest, including staff!!), I was "befriended" by a lot of the folks. I was pleasant and friendly back, but basically wanted to be left alone and get out of there!

One old guy in particular complained to me that he had moved to Corvallis to a nice neighborhood several years ago from California and he sat on his porch and waved to neighbors and tried to be friendly, but not much in response back.....

I read several years ago that a LOT of Oregon's "original" population was the loners, the "less savory" etc., who, for whatever reasons, left the east and traveled all the way to the limit of the continent, when they could have stopped at a lot of places in-between. And then they settled out in the middle of nowhere.

Might be some truth to this...Anyway, I again am taking this thread a bit off-point, but I am circling around why there may not be a lot of response to this, unlike some other areas.

For me, Portland is too far a jog, especially nowadays, but I basically hate any city of any size -- reinforced by my forced exile to a big town in Iowa a few years ago. I make an exception for San Francisco, actually, but even that city is not what my one-time hippie father described to me way back in time. When they all had flowers in their hair....

I somewhat agree but cities vary somewhat in size. I am originally from the city of Toronto Canada which almost 3 million people.

I now work in a city that has a population of 81K. I live with farms on either side but within earshot of traffic on a 60 mph state highway.
Closeness to necessities is nice. We do grow some of out own food on our 6 acres, but it was nice last weekend to get a new refrigerator close by.

I realize you may prefer life further out in the country and I respect that.

Anyway, several groups I have heard of around here, including one a former co-worker attended. I just never needed to do much YET to the Prius, as they are so reliable and not into the whole aftermarket addition to an econo-box/eco-box car, but I will ask my old bud to ask the group if they have/know of any Portland connections. If so, maybe a union.

 

we have so many out of state students here, you get used to people cheering for the other teams.

 

I was one of them when the penguins played Detroit in Detroit for Stanley cup finals game one 10 years ago.

Was treated well for an out of towner, but the Joe was not in the nice part of Detroit .

But sports can be polarizing, so straying from that and staying on prius and politics was effective here in the Bay Area.

But my driving trips to the Pacific Northwest have yielded an unfortunate reality of the “your number one” sign .

So might not be just an Oregon thing.

One trip in the mid 2000’s with my Dodge Avenger was pretty memorable: driving along Highway 1 in Oregon and getting the salute a dozen times which was accompanied by a horn blow.

Only to get to Seattle and then experience full cars worth of number 1 salutes .

I thought Oregon would be a nice place to retire, but that’s changed my opinion .

Life’s already too short, so why spend it around those that harbor I’ll will just based on a past or current locale. So I’ll stay down here in wine country .
