Featured 2019 Ford Escape to get plug-in hybrid, plus Expedition SUV hybrid, Lincoln versions too: report

one could make the same limited rationale about the Prius Prime .... and just leave it as a hybrid. Yet owners find the benefits much more favorable than the former. Matters not - SUV, or minivan, they are both about the same weight when adding 12-14kWh's to the mix. Not only do we get insane efficiency with the plugin minivan;


We get better efficiency than many Prius owners. Only difference, is we can haul 8' ladders, drywall sheets, plywood sheets, with plenty of room to spare, not to mention all of the camping possibilities.


Compare that to our Lexus SUV hybrid? Relatively same heavy chassis & area for batteries? You are only talking 28 MPG epa. Compare that to the Pacifica plug-in, well, it's been a ½ year & we've finally polished off it's 1st tank of gas. From now on, unless we drive out of the state again, we'll only fill up ½way, so the gas doesn't get stale.

Just curious, what kind of mpg do you get from Pacifica plug-in if you do not plug-in. Do you get better than 28 mpg???

 

Blended EPA is 33 - 34mpg .... ~18-20% higher than our RX

That's really good for a car that size. If Sienna came in Plug-in I would have been all over it.

Should be a strong competitor.
It is interesting that the hybrid battery has liquid cooling. I'm guessing Ford found using the same system regardless of plug existence saved costs; the PHEV pack is over 14kWh

maybe I missed it, the liquid cooling, but I did check through the spec sheet. Is the 14 kwh usable? or counting the bottom & top end buffers

According to a report from 2017, which may have confused a 2019 release date for the model year. A more current report from April 2018 reported the redesign would debut in the second half of 2019.

No mention of what the figure entailed where I saw it.

 

Maybe Toyota is following the Musk plan .... pick a date & add a couple years.

Oh and a 48v plug in would not be stupid,
I have a car that goes 45mph on 48 volts.

A big 48v battery and systems would be an order of magnitude cheaper than an HV system but would drive the battery to be right on top of the motor along with heavier (more expensive) motor inverter. My guess is the advantages of low voltage equipment even cost could outweigh disadvantages in the case that you want a low speed EV with a high speed gas propulsion.
In the case of a large vehicle where highway EV range would be abysmal this could drive the EV use case to where its most efficient.

Ford will ease into EVs
It states the new Escape was going to be released in 2019, and the next model year are regularly released in the current year.

I think the bit about the Navigator, MKC, and Expedition was misdirection from Ford. In 2017, Lincoln didn't have a model based on the Explorer, and plans for the new Explorer, like being RWD, weren't known.

The 2020 Escape, Explorer, and Aviator are up on their respective websites, with hybrid options. A near by dealer even has one Escape hybrid listed in inventory. The plug in models just won't be available until the actual 2020.
