Did you consider the Honda Clarity before your Prius Prime?

I don’t know. I have never seen crash test results for it. They were not available when I was in the market for a vehicle and I haven’t been looking since I am no longer in the market. The prime was replacing our Prius v that was totaled when my wife was in a 55 mph head on crash, due to someone coming in her lane. There was no way she was going to buy a vehicle that had not been crash tested. The fact that it was a sedan instead of a lift back was a bit of a turn off as well as the lower mpg.

The one main reason I choose the PP is Toyota’s reliability and that the Prius has been around for decades. Also, the PP advance was a little cheaper than the clarity touring.


I am seriously considering a plug-in Clarity, despite having less cargo space (one of my prime concerns).

Why? Because here in the SE Region, it is next to impossible to by a Prime!! One dealer in all of NE Florida has one on order. One dealer hours away in Tampa has one prime of the very same model on the lot.

I just got off the phone with a customer relations person at the SE Region HQ. They say they can't order that many from Toyota USA because they don't sell many. (This contradicts what I've read elsewhere about the SE Region's autonomy.) Well, how the hell do you sell any if, on any given day, there isn't one on the lot to even look at within a 5-hour drive?

This is seriously screwed up.

 

Primes are manufactured in Japan.

 

Clarity is a good car if you register it in one of the CARB states which gives you an extra 15yr/150k warranty on many critical engine and hybrid components. I would not want to own one outside of CARB states because there is a lot of tech on that car that Honda does not have the same long track record of using like Toyota does.

Also, Clarity seems to be a much better deal used. I have seen Honda dealers offering it for 25k on cargurus.com with 10k miles or less. They are also sometimes sold on craigslist in major metro areas because people buy them and then realize they want a Tesla or SUV.

 

I'm considering a Clarity, may trade in or sell my 2018 Prime advanced.
The EV range is better.

Both the Honda and Toyota "plugin hybrids" was on my short list. I ended up going with the Prius Prime do to a bigger trunk. Plus I just liked something about hatchbacks.

In your opinion of course. I didn't really care for the rear skirts when it was first released. Finally getting to see them in person and being able to follow the aero lines made it all come together. I find it's really nice looking car now. IMO

WOW, what a difference a year makes from when I first made this statement. This month I did cross-shop the prime (none locally to drive), volt, and base model 3 (order only) against the Clarity PHEV. For my needs, the Clarity won.

 

Of course... We're talking on a Toyota Prius forum.

Rob. I have a 2007 Prius. 2018 Prius. 2013 Rav4. 1999 Camry. I had a 2016 Mini Cooper S 4 door Hardtop.

So yes. This is a Prius forum but we are not blind to options out there. If Toyota made a 60 mile range Plug in Prius Prime. I would go out and buy it today.

Toyota does read this forum. So they are listening. Loose a customer due to range of the EV.

I got an offer of base Clarity for $26k+TTL. Superb deal, thinking about to replace my 09 Accord.

 

2018 or 2019?

 

My and my friend's experience with Honda hybrids has turned me off to that brand for a plugin. Ironically, Honda was first out of the box with the original Honda Insight, a little ahead of Prius here in the U.S. However, their tentative and poorly thought out approach to hybrids has since turned me off to a brand I owned for some 30 years! Also, recently checking my Honda service records, though reliable, the maintenance costs vs. both of my plug in Prii was vastly greater. Hondas just cost me a lot more to own. I don't expect that to have changed; I certainly don't trust GM, Ford, and especially Chrysler/Fiat to even get close. (Look at all the problems experienced by Motor Trend with their extended use Pacifica Hybrid Plug In Van!) I'm a conservative car owner; I'll stick with my reliable, state-of-the-art Prius Prime Advanced!! Honda will probably just inch along with plug ins; too bad since they do build very fun, and formerly small cars. Now they, and everybody else is building bigger and bigger barges for 20 people; it's not my cup of meat!!
I'll continue to lobby for an ultra light 2-seater coupe hatchback plug in from Toyota and hope for the best.

The CARB and federal hybrid battery warranty are just part of the federal emissions warranty. The hybrid battery was deemed part of the emission system. Neither may not cover the tech you're concerned about.

 

Last week I sold my Prime that I bought in December and bought a Clarity. What an improvement!!! The Clarity is a better fit for me in every way. The only thing I liked about the Prius is that HV mileage was excellent. But with the Clarity I will rarely be in HV mode due to the larger battery. I commute 85 miles per day. I charge at home and I charge at work. The 20ish miles on the Prime was only half my commute in EV mode. Now I go the whole way with 15 miles to spare!

 

Just keep telling yourself that while you:
get your 20-ish miles of EV - being careful not to wake the Gasser,
change your oil every 10k miles - regardless of how well you manage your EV miles,
and manage the HV pack's TMS needs in hot weather (crudely).

Face it, patching in a slightly bigger HV pack in the back of the passenger cabin of a prius is NOT high tech.
There are/were much higher tech PHEV's on the market.
And there is record keeping for reliability ratings for cars. Look it up. It's not an opinion piece.

 

After test driving Clarity, I really liked the way it handled the roads. It was more comfortable and roomier than PRIME, and much much better visibility than PRIME. Clarity has generally higher quality interior than PRIME. However, I really hated the the "flying bridge" center console in that car. Yeah, I also didn't care for the looks outside, but for me it was better looking car than PRIME. The biggest problem is not having a hatchback. Even with a largish trunk, a sedan is just not as useful as hatchback for our daily use. 49 miles EV range is very attractive, but with recent hike for our electric rate, it will be more expensive to run on electricity than on gas for me. I could mitigate the uncertain reliability issue on the Honda Hybrid system by leasing the vehicle for first three years, but in the end, it was just not very cost effective for me to make a switch, just not yet. I will stick with PRIME while longer.
