Thanks. I will be getting a 6yr/75k Platinum 0 deductible VSA for 585$. That seems like a good deal considering that my car dealer took $1600 for the 6yr/100k which is quoted at 885$ by Jennifer.

Since you mention 'extremely good deal' on the Toyota Care, what do you think that will be? This is my first car and I don't have an experience of regular and accidental maintenance charges. By the same dealer Jennifer, I was offered Toyota Care for 5 yr/75k at 930$

That's very good. Basically, 3 yrs 40 kmiles coverage beyond original warranty, so annual cost is less than $200. You don't want that to happen, but if any repair covered by the plan is performed after basic warranty expires you will recoup the cost easily. That said, I always stay away from those extended warranty myself, especially for reliable Toyota cars. You could have saved $16 every month, and have $585 by end of 3 years. If you have to have any repair, you could use this saving. If you continue to save $16 every month even after the end of 3 years, and nothing bad happens to the car for the first 6 years, you will have ~$1200 saved for your next major repair bill beyond the VSA covered period.

If you can take care of basic maintenance like oil and filter changes, tire rotation and fluid top-up, then Toyota Care is really not good deal at all. 5 yr/75K plan would cover 30k, 35k, 40k, 45k, 50k, 55k, 60k, 65k, 70k, 75k scheduled maintenance. If you don't do any of maintenance yourself, and always take your car to a dealer for those services, then the price seems to be reasonable. You are basically prepaying for those 10 scheduled maintenance services at average of $93/visit. As most of dealers charge at least $100 for even minor maintenance services, it may can be cost effective. Just make sure you do not let a dealer add any services not needed (not listed in the manual) when you take your car.

By definition, regular scheduled work is maintenance. What you call accidental work is repairs.

Toyota Care is your automatic, no-extra-charge maintenance every 5,000 miles for the first 2 years or 25,000 miles that everyone gets. It's simple:
    • Replace engine oil and oil filter (10,000 miles on the Prime)
    • Rotate tires(5,000 miles--any tire shop or auto repair shop can do this)
    • Multi-point vehicle inspection (good idea, but not much needed when the car is this new)
    • Inspect and adjust all fluid levels (essential, and you can learn to do this)
Toyota Care Plus is the extra pre-paid maintenance contract you were asked to buy. It covers these maintenance requirements, and any others specified in your owner's manual, for the time and mileage specified. It's probably a waste of money. None of the items needs to be done at a dealership. Any licensed auto repair shop (including Iffy-Lube type places) can do much of this to maintain your car and continue your full warranty. An owner can also do this work themselves, and maintaining records of the work may be needed for the warranty continuation.

Toyota Financial Vehicle Service Agreement, VSA, is NOT a warranty. It is a pre-paid repair contract. After the end of the extensive factory warranty it'll start covering most repairs that might be needed. Read the warranty booklet in your owner's manual kit to find out what warranty protection you already have with the purchase of the car.

So...your automatic 2 years of Toyota Care is good. Get the work done on schedule. It's real intention is to get you into the dealership's service department as a habit to make you a customer for life. Sometimes that's OK, and sometimes they pick your pocket. You can get prices for the work required in your owner's manual for the 3 years and 50,000 miles following the 2 years or 25,000 miles everyone gets for no extra charge and see if the added cost of the Toyota Care Plus is worth the cost (spoiler--it isn't). Do check the factory warranty to see all the coverages you already have and decide if the VSA is worth the cost (spoiler--it usually isn't, but it is peace-of-mind insurance).

By the way, when a dealer service writer or independent shop recommends work that is in excess of what's written in your owner's manual, always say no. There are a lot of crooks out there. Ask here for confirmation, and keep a tight grip on your wallet.

I know this post is a few months old, but would the warranty be nationwide? Same prices in NY?

Are you talking about extended warranty offered by Toyota Financial? If it is, then it is good nationwide at any TOYOTA dealer and maybe eve at non dealer authorized service center too (I am not sure of this non-dealer part though). The price varies vastly from a dealer to dealer for the exactly the same contract, so shop around for the best deal if you really want to buy it.

Yes I saw prices listed in this thread that seem reasonable. I wanted to make sure that those prices were the same through the entire United States because a lot of people are not from where I am so I wanted to be sure that when I go into the go she ate that 7-year 100000 mile warranty is you know 1500 bucks or less.

I picked up a 10yr/100K mi/0 deductible warranty for $2K, mostly for peace of mind. Just seemed to have a lot of electronics in the advanced.

You guys should contact jtaylor at gowolverinetoyota.com. The price for that would be about 400 cheaper than 2k.

Yeah, I'm not normally the type that buys the extended warranty but since the Prime seemed to have a lot of electronics in it so I pulled the trigger. Plus, I can cancel at any time and get a refund or transfer it to a new owner should I decide to part with the car. Again, mostly for just a peace of mind on this car.

Slight necrobump, but doing my research through the search function...when it says "4YR/100K B40 $ 620" does that mean in addition to the 3yr/36k mile factory warranty or just beyond?
In other words, is 4/100 actually 7/136k or truly just 4 years or 100k whichever comes first?

Nope. The counter for both factory and extended the clock starts on day one even if you wait 2yrs 364 days to buy the extended one.

Hi all, thanks for the feedback, I ended up going with a Toyota VSA 5/125, $0 deductible and diagnostic fees (top tier coverage) for $950 and buying it outright for cash. It felt like a very good price and I appreciated the business manager's approach to the sale. "Here's the best I can do, I hope to have your business, if not, I understand." I shared with him how I researched prices on priuschat and he actually asked that I share his contact information. He said anyone who may be interested in a Toyota VSA is more than welcome to contact him, they only sell the Toyota VSA with the top tier of coverage. They try to focus on volume of sales to hit Toyota targets so they try to be very competitive with the price. The dealership itself is a small family owned Toyota dealership. Here's his contact info, I do not get any form of referral, and have no vested interest other than sharing what I feel is a fair price and a fair sales process to help out fellow priuschat members.

I got one when I bought my 2010 Prius with Advanced Tech Package. My view was some of that equipment is expensive to replace. The extended warranty ended up paying for itself (paid $2170 for it). The following service was performed on my 2010's extended warranty:

    Steering Gear Assembly (45510-47050) replaced
    Replace rear main oil seal
    Replace steering intermediate shaft
    Replaced Steering Gear Assembly (45510-47050)
    Reseal oil pan
    Reseal timing cover

Whenever you get the first year of a new model, it inevitably has issues. Not sure why they had to replace that assembly twice over the years, but it would have cost me $1100 each time without a warranty. It definitely saved me some money, but more importantly piece of mind. It was a sunk cost and insurance that I wouldnt have to pay for anything for 7yrs.

Since the warranty expired I've spent about $100 on little stuff.

Fast forward to last year, I got a 2017 Prius Prime because of how reliable the 2010 has been (still have the 2010, too). I bought an extended warranty for ~$1700 and just like a previous poster said, mine had to do with the cost of replacing the 11.6" display and a lot of the new tech inside. I agree with most people that its "not needed", but once bitten, twice shy for me. Especially if you get something with a lot of tech in it and its the first model year like I did

I just got an estimate of nearly $3K to replace an 11.6” display that has stopped responding to touch. The service advisor at my local Toyota dealership recommended contacting Toyota Customer Care personally and pleading my case.
before agreeing to any paid service. Suggestions please! I’ve owned nothing but Prius vehicles since 2002 (‘02 & ‘13 before this ‘20 Prime XLE) and had near zero out of pocket repair costs. Naturally, with that history, I declined any extended warranty offers. Now, at 75000 ODO miles, I’m finding life with an unresponsive touch screen most annoying, but I am finding work-around for most, but definitely not all needs using voice commands and Apple CarPlay. I’ve never had to deal with Customer Care, so advice would be most welcome! Will it be best NOT to mention that, post-Toyota Care coverage, I’ve always changed my own oil and filters?? I'd love to have them cut me a deal, since I’m not likely to lay out the three grand for a new screen, and the lack is most frustrating!

I really should have startted a new thread rather than post in this long dormant one, i suspect… can a moderator do that or should I copy, edit and paste??
