I think in case of Subaru, the eyesight system is optional for all, or if not all, most of new Subaru, but not standard. Giving a choice to consumers is OK for me.

They got leapfrogged. They've been offering EyeSight safety since 2008 (2010 in USA) and they were a leader in active safety tech for years, but now everyone else has caught up and a number of brands have surpassed them on this stuff.

Given that this stuff runs in cycles, I won't be surprised if they take another jump soon and wind up out front for a while.

My daughter just bought a new impreza for 19k before ttl.

It has eyesight and seems to be a very nice system so far

Giving people to ability to, in effect, opt out makes cars less safe imo.

And that add more cost to a new car, thus makes some people to opt for a cheaper used older cars which maybe inherently even less safe than a new car without such optional safety features. The irony is that, on one hand automakers seem to take a paternalistic action to add those safety features even though they are not mandated, but on the other hand they keep adding infotainment system to distract drivers. Teaching people how to pay attention to the road and drive safely would be more effective ways to save peoples lives on the road than buying a car with an automatic emergency braking system IMOHO.

    I was a just a little kid.
But I remember my Aunts, Uncles, Parents, all sitting around arguing and debating shoulder harness seat belts vs. lap belts only.

I had an fantastic Aunt,-she was a great person but she had a strange 1940's....you don't ruffle your clothes attitude, she didn't use seat belts PERIOD. Way past a period where using them was even questionable.
She'd buy a brand new car, get it home, go out with a steak knife and cult the belts out. The whole family tried to persuade her that it was a VERY bad idea, on a lot of levels. But she wouldn't be deterred. Luckily....she never had a bad accident. But it was pure luck.

Towards the end of her life, she started getting pulled over by the police who were not sympathetic to her 1940's attitude or what she perceived as being a personal freedom issue, and she got "no seat belt tickets". I wonder what the police thought when she would explain that it wasn't that she forgot to buckle up...that she actually did not have seat belts? In any case, tickets were written and fines paid.
This FINALLY persuaded her to NOT cut them out...and start using them. But it took decades....and the long arm of the law.

So anyway....I think advances in safety are great. Technology is really creating a safer vehicle.
Most of these new advances, are automatic systems. Which is great for humanity. Saves us from ourselves, despite ourselves.

No, all grades of the new FORESTER have EyeSight standard.

It's the Driver Monitoring System which doesn't come on the base model.

Maybe on new Forester, but not on ALL SUBARU cars. Impreza, for example, does not have EyeSight standard in all the trims.

The Impreza/Crosstrek and WRX don't have it standard, and BRZ simply doesn't have it at all. The rest of the US line up have it standard. Those are a new redesign for this or last year, so the Imprezas and WRX may get it standard in the next generation.
