I was all set to buy a new XLE and was shocked to find I need to spend several thousand more on a limited if I want one. i really don’t like using my phone as my GPS. What do most folks do for navigation...I really need it at my age. I also thought the XLE came with the larger touch screen....wrong again.

Whoa. Didn’t see that in the specs. You’re right, they removed the 7” MFD with nav so you only have the base 6.1” sans nav or the 11.6” with nav. Weird.

Its gonna be much cheaper to go with a phone gps than to have it put into the car itself. Map updates for cars cost money after they become outdated.

Garmin Nuvi even has models with free map updates.

Many/most of them come that way lately.
Unless you want to spend $1000 on a phone with a large screen, then a stand-alone GPS really is the best thing to do.
You can get a new one for around $500.
If you don't need the large screen, a lot less.

It's cheaper to go buy a GARMIN - or use your phone.

I'm skeptical about built-in GPS, having heard horror stories of big $$$ to keep up to date.

Entune GPS is garbage. Most cars do not have good built in navigation software. You should use your phone. I don’t know a lot about the stand alone GPS units but everyone thinks Google Maps on a phone is much better than the built in.

Also I bought a 2014 Corolla with the Entune nav last month. The dealer promised to get it fixed so now we have a temporary Prius C base radio that sits crooked in the dash. It has been exactly a month and they still have not finished fixing it. I hear this happens all the time with the Corolla nav unit. Not sure if the Prius has the same hardware. Definitely has the same software. My Prius has the 7” nav and it worries me that I will have to pay $3000 to fix it, which is what the dealers usually charge to replace the Corolla’s system. Just another reason why navigation is not a selling point.

    Not exactly everyone.
    They all have some quirks.
The one in my C and the one in my Ford both work fine......mostly.
    So does Google.....mostly.

If you update the built-in ones every 3 years, the annual cost works out to about $50.

My son initially tried the GPS in his Prius V but gave up and when back to using his trusty Garmin with his phone as a backup.

I bought my Prius without GPS and do not miss it. I use either Waze on my phone or my Garmin if I need GPS.

Garmin is simpler to use while actually driving the vehicle if you are prone to doing that.

Looking at some posts here I think some people just buy their car for the entertainment system or just to look at. ;)

Another vote for Garmin Nuvi. I use it on long trips. I use the phone for around town stuff when needed because it's more convenient.

In car Nav is a racket IMHO. It cost thousands of dollars more as an option. You have to pay a fortune to update map. If it breaks, will cost hundreds or more to fix it. AND, it usually does not work as good as a cheap aftermarket stand alone NAV system. Another vote for Garmin Nuvi. I have a in car NAV from TOYOTA on my PRIME, but I still use Garmin on a dash when I need real navigation.

How did you guess? It's plugged in and will soon start charging. Going to try the climate control feature today. Hence the sunshine.

I think some manufacturers now include upgrades for a few years - FORD say for 7 years but no later than 30 September 2024 (odd??) - on the proviso that the car is serviced by a FORD dealer. MITSUBISHI looks like it's free.

But, it looks like TOYOTA isn't - simply saying "should contact a Dealer to confirm current pricing". In other words - it's not free.

Friends who have built in GPS have commented that, even though it's updated by the dealer, it's a long way out of date - and their GARMIN (or Android) is more reliable.
