Not a fan of VW, but it is pretty smart. This is the start of the fall for Tesla. Legacy auto makers will soon be way far ahead of Tesla, why? There pockets are deeper!

Money = Research, marketing, range of models, security, longevity and availability of cash to grow at a rate as needed.

Remember big IBM from the 1970s and 1980s.
Tiny little Microsoft tried to build an OS for PCs...even though IBM knew how to build software for the big iron.

    How did that turn out?

Compare the market cap of Microsoft in 1990 and now to that of IBM.

Sure, BMW, Mercedes, Toyoya, Honda may still all be around in 10 or 20 or 30 years. But, Tesla's relative importance could be similar to Microsoft's.

BTW, besides the IBM Watson winning in Jeopardy a while back, what has IBM done in the last 10 or 25 years that anyway cares about?
    And what about Microsoft?

there's barely a difference between a cold corpse and a catatonic 100 year old that can barely fog a mirror with no brain activity. In both cases (people & dying businesses) one should seriously consider pulling the plug.

Close to my initial response to this a few months ago, but there are pluses to this.

Today, the built in battery allows for easy, cheap installation in locations where fast charging currently isn't because of the available hook ups to the grid. The battery is a buffer between the fast car charging and slower grid, or the buffering allows the charger to avoid demand fees.

In the future, these could become like porta potties for BEVs. Deploy them to stadiums on game days, and then to the local fair grounds the next day. They provide charging where many BEVs will be parked for a limited time, and permanently installed chargers can't be justified.
That maybe the case for these, but the concept could have valid uses.
How many US households have a IBM personal computer today?

Many multinational corporations (including ours) still run Windows 7 just because subsequent versions are such horrible junk.

Let me clarify:), how many have a computer or laptop with an IBM label. Even just a sticker for having some IBM component inside or installed.
