Normally a back up camera would have a guiding lines to tell where your vehicle is. My does not have it or maybe it is turned off? I uploaded one with guiding lines to compare ̣I got it on the internet. One without lines are on my vehicle.
The lack of lines, plus the funhouse perspective: I use ours about as much as the fog lights, and the headlight washers.
for what it's worth, i know i have 4th gen but if the trunk isn't closed all the way you wont have lines. may want to check. perhaps gen 2/3 has same design?
There's two types of cameras: rearview camera and a back-up camera........ rearview has no lines as it's merely for viewing behind the car back-up has the guiding lines that assist those who prefer to back into parking spaces
Yeah same here. And in our 2010 Canadian Touring, sans big screen on the dash, the image is shown in the left side of the rear view mirror. Funhouse wide angle, tiny, what's not to like.
You are thinking 'new' normal. But your 2012 Prius is the 'old' normal, essentially a 2010 Prius released in March 2009, i.e. 10 years old. The first backup cameras did not have such lines, those were added later. And Toyota was not among the leaders in adding those lines. Personally, I was quite happy to get my first-ever backup camera at all.
We both use our Prius’s backup camera absolutely religiously when backing of parking spaces, because with the near 180-degree fisheye lens, that camera sees around the rear corners of the adjacent cars MUCH better than I can by whipping my head around. The image is, of course, highly distorted, so the rule has to be “if you can see ANYTHING at all, no matter how small, stop backing up until you have a clear visual identification of the location and trajectory of the person or object“. My wife just said that she would not purchase another car that did not have such a camera. That said, I have installed after-market backup cameras with guidelines on a RAV-4 and our Tundra pickup, and the guidelines are quite useful for backing into a space.
