Should I be concerned with putting a lot of Miles on my Prius

That's what it was originally made for. Prius needs little maintenance. I have one that had 230x miles and it still drives like a dream.

not sure renting will save you anything in the long run.

check out the rental costs and see what that works out to in extra prius miles.

 

I would go for it; that's what it's for.

We have opposite issue: only need the car sporadically, for crosstown runs at most. We've started taking skytrain when going downtown too, especially for events: parking rates are onerous, and just less stress.

Be cognizant any time soon would be good for EGR circuit and intake manifold cleaning.

71k? …a mere baby! …hardly run it! …many, many miles/years ahead! …sit back and enjoy it!

 

My 06 gen 2 only has around 60k miles yet does frequent long trips to/from college. It does have a new Toyota HV battery and is on its 3rd inverter pump. Due to age, I plan to change the waterpump, belt, and sparkplugs soon as a preventative measure.

The more your drive your Prius, the more your hybrid battery is cycled and the happier it will be. Sitting and being driven rarely is bad for a hybrid car.

I would say don't worry about it. I have a 2004 Prius (original owner) and have over 190,000 miles on it. More than double what I had on any American car in the last 50 years. Just had its first brake job at the 190k service. No problems with the main battery (the high voltage one.) It's still my daily driver, I just don't drive as much now. (Retired.)

I've read each charge/discharge is akin to a life, and there are a finite number of lives, around a thousand max, for NIMH batteries.

Do the research and the preventative maintenance, check and change the oil often (whatever that means to you).

That's true, but it's also harmful for a battery to sit for a long period of time.

 

I worked with a guy who always rented a car on trips. He said he ran the hell out of them and if they broke down just call up the rental company and they bring you another one. It does relieve the stress on a trip. Your call, your money. You probably won't be gone long enough to have any problems with your car not being used for a few days or weeks.

 

No EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation), and PCV (Positive Crankcase Ventilation) comes off top of valve cover, less clog prone, on Gen 2.
