Burning 3.9qts every 1000 miles

    If I read the same post as you, I don't think he said to do that. From what I remember, it was using ATF as an engine flush while doing the oil change. That's what I'd be doing, if I was trying anything at all.

    The paint thinner and carb cleaner were used as a piston soak.

    Well, I picked up a bottle of sea foam and stuck 4 ounces in the oil and 12 ounces of seafoam in the gas tank, which had about 5gallons to maybe clean the cat enough to drop the check engine light. I've already ran through the gas and it's still on. Currently at 246,804 miles. We'll see if the seafoam has any effect on the oil.

    It certainly made the oil thinner and that should make it disappear quicker.

    IF, and only if, your problem is caused by stuck rings, it might help some.
    Highly unlikely.

    The stuff is thinner than 5w-30 oil? That’s practically thinner than water already.

    It contains mostly naptha (white gas), alcohol and petroleum distillates (kerosene), all of which are solvents that ARE thinner than water.

    Solvents like acetone are as thin as water,

    Generally once you get the motor warm the sea foam should vaporize out but personally I would use it or MMO to soak only and not for running in the oil during a change.

    Compounds that make rings seal better should help your consumption issue,
    Now what could those be?

    your engine is done, no snake oil in a bottle is going to fix having been run low on oil that many times. Sooner or later you're going to get rod knock and then soon after that it won't even run. Why not use this opportunity to look for a junkyard motor to swap in if you want to keep the car.

    That's a good run. I'd swap the engine and keep it going. That's my plan :)

    Found this post in my neighborhood today. Maybe someone has been stealing my oil... LoL. Highly unlikely, though. I'm a Gambler, willing to make a bet that it reaches over 300,000. I have gone to a junk yard and they have 2 prius. The owner said the engines were $100 if I took it out myself, $200 for them to take out, and $350 with warranty. Gonna drive the original till it goes out. I feel it's got Alot left in her, despite all the posts that it's shot, and not gonna last much longer. Already put over 60k miles in it's current condition, what's another 60k to 300k

    O2 sensors don't like oil or coolant, they get contaminated.

    If I were buying a used engine I would do a cylinder leak down test on it before I pulled the engine.
    If it won't pass this test it is junk. That's not to say the engine couldn't have other problems but it would eliminate one variable.

    Leak down test only checks compression rings not oil control unfortunately.

    Reread my post, I mention that there could be other problems. Not too many things you can check in an junk yard engine until you start it.

    IIRC someone here got a 2nd gen install, and it was almost while-you-wait, around 4 hours. I guess you pretty much HAVE to wait, if that's you're only ride, lol.

    $200 for them to pull it is a steal if the engine is in good shape. I just paid $500 at a local junkyard. Hell, what's $100 these days, 4 tanks of gas?

    Depends on exactly HOW they remove it.
    IF.....they do things like cut wires and hoses and pipes......then it might not be such a good deal after all.
