Prius Gen II - Dying Traction Battery Question

Not sure if that works or not. @jerrymildred killed a battery by forgetting to wait.

 

It should work. When I blew a cell, it was from driving it immediately. Running the A/C in neutral should work.

 

That's worth checking out. If the rest of the drive system is performing well, the battery can be pretty degraded and you'd still get good mileage. But it you have low tires, dragging brakes, out-of-tune ICE, or other impediments to forward motion, the best battery in the world won't do a whole lot of good.

 

I think your not charging it long enough. You should leave it charging for at least 24 hours. It will make a significant difference. Remember the charging current is very low very limited so not to invoke heat when it charges so thoroughly charging that big pack up takes a long long time.
You have nothing to lose except loss of the car for 24 hours.

 

@Raytheeagle is somebody very experienced in the Prolong system.

 

No, charge until it peaks and then let it charge for a further 4 - 6 hours. In total that should be 24 hours give or take.

 

Hard to tell when the voltage peaks. Don't bother even looking just let it charge for 24 hours. You will be surprised how much better it gets.

 

I just keep an eye on it periodically, but my charge up cycles are around 24 hours total in length.
