Hello , New to the Chat

I purchased a viper ds4+ from bestbuy and got it installed on my 2013 prius
it works fine on the cold mornings lasting up to 20 minutes , however it looks like when the engine is warm and the EV kicks in , the car shuts off, this is a problem if the cabin is cold and the engine is hot the car will shut off in less than 10 secs.

Is this normal ? im specially worried when summers comes along and what i want is to cool the car , if the ev kicks in then the car is just going to shut off right way.
i went back to best buy and the expert told me that is how it works

Is there no way to make the car last the 10 or 20 mins like non-hybrid cars do ?

    TLDR

Car shuts off as soon as the EV mode turns on which could be 5 to 10 secs after activating remote start

    Thank you

What do you mean by "EV kicks in?" EV is a driving mode, when the car is moving.

Remote start is no different that starting the car normally. The engine will cycle on/off as needed to keep the traction (high voltage) battery charged.

So, no, there is no way to make the engine run for 10 or 20 minutes straight, regardless of whether you remote started the car or not.

    welcome!
what do you mean by 'car shuts off'? the entire car, or just the engine?

a/c is electric btw, no need for the engine except to recharge the battery

I'm having a vague recollection that sometimes (maybe not always) the ICE is involved in generating heat for the cabin. Is that right? I seem to recall a time when the display showed my battery so full that the ICE was no longer charging it, yet the ICE was running, I think to make heat. I could be wrong about why, but I definitely remember the battery full and ICE running.

Could be, if you’re calling for heat.
Otherwise, the tranny spins the engine without gas to burn off extra charge the battery won’t take.
That’s what b mode does going down a big hill

Place a heavy object to press and hold accelerator down, but then your taking up gas and all the green eco people will say you’re harming Mother Nature.

There was a thread that asked how keep ice on when filling up with new coolant. The responds were hilarious.

Now that I've completely hijacked the OP's thread..... :)

Scenario: Car was parked. Cold outside. Cabin set for 70 degrees. Battery showed full. ICE on. Graphics showed engine on but no flow to battery.

So, bisco's point makes sense if the car is moving. And I don't know what maintenance mode is.

Does anything explain the scenario I saw?

yes, cabin set to 70, engine running to satisfy, no charge to battery because full.

i hate to say it, but i think you're gonna have to go back to best buy and question them on this one. a dealer installed remote does not shut the car off, iirc.

    maybe contact viper?

I have a Viper remote start. It is designed to shut off when certain events occur such as a door opens or it times out. The time out length is adjustable. It also turns off if you press the Viper button again. It sounds like it is erroneously getting one of these signals, so it is probably a Best Buy installation issue.

Just to make sure we have the problem correct.....

You start the car remotely. Sometimes it will continue to run just fine until the timeout, but sometimes it randomly turns OFF short of the timeout.

OK, I don't have an answer to the OP's question, but I have considered installing a remote engine start on my PRIME to prep the car in a cold morning to defrost the windshield. I don't care much about cabin being warm, but I really need some headstart on melting thick ice on the windshield to shorten the time scraping them off every morning when the temp is subzero.

My question is can a remort start be set to turn on the windshield defroster? On PRIME, DEFROST switch is turned off when the car is shut down, and simply turning the car back on do not engage the DEFROST even if ICE comes on at the start. If I have to get in the car and manually turn on the DEFROST, it defeats the purpose of having a remote start.

i don't think so. someone just found a remote start that would actually start a pip while it is still plugged in. that's about the best I've seen so far.

Yeah, starting an ICE and AC heat will help, but it is probably not enough to defrost a piece of thick ice on the windshield. Unfortunately, if the remote starter cannot start the defroster switch, I have no use for the system. I guess I will continue the ritual of walking out to the car to turn on the DEFROSTER manually at 5:30 am daily. :(

i suppose a good electrical mech could jury rig that switch to on/off instead of auto off, which is probably to override hv mode on start up.

Here is a video showing the problem , it the car lasted more than 10 secs ,it all depends on the speed EV shows up
