2005 - just broke in 365K + miles :) Never any issues till now....love this car

Thinking it is Transmission but not sure.

    Battery not charging fully
    Whines
No error codes as of yet
If you floor it just whines and does not speed up
    Just replaced 12V battery
    New Cats past few months

    Some questions:
    • What is the battery behavior otherwise?
    • If you try to force charge it, what happens?
    • Where is the whine coming from?
    • When was the last transmission fluid change?

Battery was fine till past few days when all this started. However it was checked yesterday and no issues as no codes are showing for anything.
How do you force charge it?
Whine has stopped. Occurred when floored it. Sounded like coming from front/trans area or engine.
Fluid change...umm a while ago - it is due.

Basically put the car in gear, foot in the brake (use the parking brake for extra safety) and hit the gas and watch the battery charge;).

I’d change the transmission fluid and see if you have any particulate in it. If you have metal shavings, it isn’t a good thing.

But it could be early signs of the battery going out.

Good luck and keep us posted (y).

Engine reved up when you hit that wall? Any kind of kick down when floored? Or motor not revving up and car hits the wall?

Ok, tried the force charge - not to successful but took it for a spin. Battery charged fully out of the blue but drained quickly when tried to get up to speed. Ran great till got to 50 + and then started doing regular thing of kind of stuttering.
    Think though found issue:
Looked at invert pump reservoir and there was not any movement at all in "ready" mode and when engine engaged - could that be this easy?

Gets to 50s no issue then stalls/hits wall and won't accelerate any more with pedal to the floor. Just like trans is slipping but just ran it again testing some stuff and battery charged fully, ran great till got to 50s again, battery drained quickly and would not accelerate any higher.
Checked invert reservoir and no movement in "ready" or engine engaged

THANKS EVERYONE!!! Hopefully it is as simple as invert pump as not getting any codes.

The battery doesn’t sound healthy either;).

One cell in one of the modules is probably on its way out:cool:.

Be ready for that reality as well(y).

get a code reader and Dr. Hybrid. Do the HV battery test to see which modules are reading lower than the others.

No codes meaning no lights are on the dash no indications on the mfd no red triangle of death? Or you have lights on dasy but when you use an obd code reader it comes up with no codes? Which is it?

Sure does sound like the hybrid battery is in limp mode..

The Prius does not have a torque converter.

This sure sounds to me like either a hot inverter or else a badly out of balance traction battery. If it does it from the get-go with a cold engine, I'd be looking into that battery. If it runs OK for a while cold, but then starts acting up, them I'd suspect the inverter pump.

I don't remember you saying what code ready you used. Lots of them have no codes for the hybrid system. Techstream would tell you for sure. Ot, as mentioned, Dr. Hybrid would show the condition of the battery fairly well.

There is no circulation in the inverter reservoir. So we know that's a issue.
