Source: Exclusive: GM's Cadillac will introduce EV in fight against Tesla - sources | Reuters

Cadillac is expected to become General Motors Co's (GM.N) lead electric vehicle brand as the largest U.S. automaker gears up to introduce a new model under that luxury marquee to challenge Tesla Inc (TSLA.O), two people briefed on the matter said Thursday.

GM is set to announce Friday as part of an investor update that a Cadillac will be the first vehicle based on its forthcoming "BEV3" platform, the people said. The vehicle platform is the basis for vehicle underpinnings, including the battery system and other structural and mechanical parts.

GM is not expected to disclose on Friday additional details, including precisely when the Cadillac EV will be built, whether it will be a crossover or sedan, or where it will be assembled, the sources said.
    . . .

Perhaps Ms. @hill will be relieved to get out of those dreadful Teslas.

    Because $80,000

Also besides Malibu all the cars are in the Caddy shed meaning that is the only car marquee they have left to put EVs in.

Many Volt owners suggested the Volt should have wore the marquee, maybe GM was listening

The Caddy Volt did not do well.
That's a good thing. It's a platform designed just for a BEV; no allowances for an engine to get in the way, and it can be used for multiple models, not just one or two.

Because GM engineering made sure the 'tunnel' splitting the cabin was an important design feature.

It was more because it was $80 grand for a Voltaire with some Caddy upgrades.

If we weren't going to get a middle seat in the Prime, putting the battery in a central tunnel would have preserved the Prius cargo space.

"Cataract" or "caddywumpus." A friend of mine just traded her 2017 Cadillac CTS for a Toyota 4runner.

The car was in the shop for 6 weeks when the sunroof stopped working. They replaced the sunroof, headliner and the entire windshield. There were extra screws in the cup holder when she got it back. I had to lend her the lithium ion jump pack to get it started so we could drive it to the Toyota dealer. Four months later and the 4runner has been running perfectly.

despite tesla's flaws, i see caddy having a hard time going head to head with them. what is cadillac strength these days, monster suv's?

seems to me, we have toyota being relatively honest about their feelings on electric vehicles, and the rest are a bunch of posers.
but who knows, 5-10 years from now, i could be eating crow

ford and gm slashing work force, not sure they even know where they're at after a relatively nice run in sales

Might be less than 5 years. VW unveiled their dedicated BEV platform recently, and the first car using it comes out next year in Europe. Ford and VW are forming a large partnership aimed at reducing development costs by sharing them. They haven't shared details, but sharing this platform might be part of it. Appears Cadillac is working on their own dedicated platform. Converting some ICE platform to meet regulations is easy. Spending the bucks on a dedicated platform that won't be viable for their current ICE models means long term planning.

it all sounds good, but i'm just skeptical, as always

what looks like viability, can quickly turn to bankruptcy, as history has shown, i hope i'm wrong

Basically, GM never found a way to out Prius any model of Prius... especially the plug-in. That design was far too expensive to actually work as a choice for the masses. And after 8 years of struggle to draw mainstream interest, GM is giving up. Blending engine & motor failed 3 times.... Two-Mode.... Volt-1.... Volt-2.

Hopefully there's something electric-only that will be competitive for the masses. Bolt certainly isn't Cadillac quality, so whatever EV comes out to compete with Tesla will have a higher price tag.

according to john - it's a learning thing .... learn from hydrogen ... learn from prior golf cart ev's ... learn from from hybrids & phev's ... so yea -even draw on the Bolt learning. Just because it still smarts that I bought a VEGA back in the day ...
    ;)
Who knows ... they may have a winner in the works. After all - they do occasionally get it right. All their pickup & SUV buyers seem to love their rides - so who knows.

Well... if he doesn’t kiss Toyota’s butt on a daily basis, his day is not done. ;)

I watched the GM CEO on tv the other day and every sentence contained "focus". Sounded like the consultants I heard for years. Not a bit of information in maybe 10 minutes about why they were doing this car or what the advantages of that technology was for the consumer. 5 years and she has produced what? A mid engined Corvette that got recalled before it was even out. Made Tesla's timelines look like they were on-plan.

Does Toyota sell a power-split hybrid bus?

Then GM's power-splet PHEV don't seem to be failing in China.
