Featured Beginning of the end for the Prius?

Hah, thought for a moment you were talking about these:

 

The running cost is chump change compared the the difference in purchase price. The last time I looked the difference was in the $40k range and how many miles would it take to recover that difference?

 

Yeah, yeah, yeah..... I see a sweet Elantra for $11,400.....ohhh, my color.....& no mark-up.

 

Do you have a study or link that shows that?
Most of the existing Tesla owners (S and X) have free supercharger use...so yes they use them a lot.
Most model 3 owners have to pay. Why would someone drive "to" a supercharger, wait to charge, then drive home and pay more than if they charged at home with normal utility rates or cheaper solar?

I was one of the very first Prius owners...a 2001. The 6th one sold in my area (according to the dealer). I've owned 3 others since. I really like the Prius. I still have the PIP. I'm not criticizing anything about the Prius. You can see all three family members with a Prius in my picture (a 2001, 2004 and 2009).
But I can do the math on my fuel prices.
I got a model 3 and was actually surprised at how efficient it is.

Efficient with your money? How much more did you pay for the M3 than you might have for some HY or ICE car? How long will it take to recover that cost? What other use could you have made of the difference in cost?

There is no way I can justify on a financial basis a M3 purchase over any car I currently have (28 and 40 MPG). I may simply buy on "want" combined with "duty" but I'll lose money over an ownership lifetime (typically 10 years).

After all, everyone knows how we all buy cars as Investments - that eventualky recover their own cost. Sure wish i'd kept that '72 Chevy Vega - i be rich by now, i' m sure

True, the Model 3 will definitely be more expensive in the long run. However, for someone really wanting to save money, they will always buy used, bike/walk everywhere, or take public transportation. Can't say how expensive the Model 3 is without admitting you also had cheaper options when you bought your Prius. We all have to weigh what is important to us with our given finances.

 

Yeah I agree...it's a tough crowd here sometimes. I'm not sure why there can't even be a *little* bit of Tesla criticism on a Prius-centric forum without people going berserk...lol.

efficient in terms of energy per mile...which is what I thought we started talking about in the first place.
If you want efficiency including the price of the car then I think this is the wrong forum.
You'd want a forum for used cars made before the Prius existed...or a bike, or a scooter, or a pair of hiking boots.

To me, the whole idea of the hybrids (aka Prius), and then EVs (such as the Tesla) is to innovate with new more efficient technologies and then drive down the cost to widen the overall market for more efficient vehicles. You may have a different view.
