He still thinks the body has problems but everything else is great. Given how crappy the competition has turned out, I too would prefer good guts over a pretty shell.

I didn't watch the video because of the length. What did he say about the body?

Everyone that has seen my model 3 thinks it looks good ;-) Biggest complaint a slight fit problem with the doors, and it will take awhile to get that fixed because the shop is backed up. None of the initial finish problems are there on my car, but its black.

    His criticisms:
    • Battery does not work as a structural part. Based on a stress and strain survey, the battery carries no part of the body mechanical strength.
    • The multi-piece, aluminum trunk costs too much compared to a drop-in fiber glass part.
    • The body is about 300 lbs too heavy for the strength.
    • In another video, the multi-part, assembled wheel well liner should have been single, stamped parts.
There were other issues covered previously but not repeated.

Hmmmm ... just noticed on his website/bio - Mr Munro touts being a NASA chair-person. Seems the way Space X is putting parts of NASA to shame - Mr Munro would have / should have proposed Musk's money saving ideas to NASA long ago. Wonder what happened.

    Uh... Government is the problem.

My brother in law ran the VA outside Altanta... the one in the news under Obama. He told me he could not make any changes because Congress made it law for contracts Congress made. He left the VA 2 years later to get big paycheck instead in private hospital where he CAN make changes.

    Thanks, my take

1 and 3, Battery doesn't carry structure and 300 lbs too heavy for strength, well I can't fully speak to it, but the battery weight seems fine and perhaps it has more crash worthiness not being part of stress bearing elements. The suspension and handling are tuned well for the weight. My feeling is that if you go down to a 210 mile range (standard range) battery and some slight redesign and weight will be in line with similar sports sedans.

    2) The trunk well yes it looks like they can save cost, weight, and labor by a redesign. I would say this is minor.

    4) wheel well liner probably true, but this goes in the bucket of who cares.

Labor per vehicle is still too high, fit really needs to be improved and these could be related.

Just sat down and saw all of it. At the end when they talked about Rivian, Munro said he cannot talk about it. That really means he is their consultant. Good for Rivian getting advice instead of thinking they are better than industry experts... uh.. Musk?

So I can assume the chassis is done right instead of the way Tesla does it.

If it's too heavy, then why does it have the quickest acceleration, the longest range, and the second best efficiency of any similar competitor?

While improvement is always possible, I don’t see anyone else building a car with a combination of safety, style, performance and convenience.
If Tesla is doing it wrong, why isn’t someone beating them at their own game?

And, BTW, Tesla has been hiring traditional auto experts for at least 10 years.

Never said Tesla not doing okay. As an investor, are you saying Tesla should not build a car that can make better margin if they do it right?

actually - that's not really a showing that he's a consultant. For example, Toyota has invited some of us to special events where the invite was predicated upon signing a non-disclosure. That didn't make us consultants, rather companies just like to keep things on the QT until they are good & ready to make disclosures themself.

munro knows his stuff, but every statement he makes is not dripping with honey.

i take it with a grain of sand, like anything else. what car company has he built?

as for rivian, he's as likely a defendant in a lawsuit as he is a consultant

Well. He said many times he loves everything except the chassis. Nothing new here if you watch the other show. Did you not see the Superbottle and magnet segments? He went gaga over them. Then bashed all the other car companies to not do them like Tesla.

According to him, worked for all big 3. He is consulting with Chrysler now. But sounded like he had a long history with Ford.

In the other show, he was funny how Caddy management thought buying robots for assembly is all is needed, not programming their robots. Brought him in to setup robot when assembly line should be running already. His recommendation was to put the Union workers back to work.

Don't know how he is involved with Rivian, but obviously he knows enough to have signed NDA. Even the hosts stopped him quickly.

    MUNRO aka teardown tech guy

    FYI
I really like Sandy Munro and his teardowns that he discussed

The geometry of the magnets and magnet orientation on the Tesla 3 motor internals has no match in current marketplace of EV or hybrids..

The guy is critic and cheerleader and therefore makes him unique

Job well done on BMWl3 and Tesla

Tesla fans were convinced Munro was bought off by big oil when he first had less than pleasant things to say about the Model 3. Wonder what they think of him now.
