EV will really start to take off when not only range...but more importantly...when the infrastructure/time/convenience factors at least "match" that of current ICE only vehicles.

 

It’s going to happen. China, the huge market is pushing for ev. European cities are mandating EVs only. Volvo is switching to EV only in the coming years. I think I read a report Jaguar is heading EV only.

Part of that I think we have to credit Tesla. Automakers are afraid of them. And you don’t want to be left behind with technology.

And you now what, if it makes the air in LA cleaner (because it looks brown in the summer) I am all for it. And it’s even better for air if we invest in renewables. Rant over.

 

...but that involves inconvenience and dodging the "autonomous" EVs!

 

My comment to this discussion is the Prius is sold globally. The Prius is very successful in Japan, Europe, and other places. It's highly unlikely they will discontinue the car where it is selling successfully. If gas prices rise in the US, the demand will come back and so will the sales. I don't think there is any long term threat to the Prius.

I consider my EV more convenient than an ICEr. Do you wake up every morning with a full tank?

Good for you, and no...but I don't have to wait over night to fill up either. I'm quite happy with our Prius and RAV4 HV...for now. I can and do fill up on demand in about 3 minutes and anywhere I need to...locally or going cross country. That's practical infrastructure/time/convenience...and my hybrids get better mpg than ICE.

I'm not the enemy here...and neither are those that EV is not practical for yet...or those that just don't want either. So whether Grandpa drives a 1 Ton Diesel or Grandson drives a Leaf...in this Country we still have the freedom to choose.

 

I'm filling up about once a month, and even then the gauge is barely below half. Retired. When I was working took the train. Around the time we got our 2010 my wife was still working, in a job with a lot of driving. But now, both retired, we've got a garage queen.

 

Quite true, although it could be discontinued in the North American market while still sold elsewhere.

Agreed, according to the Wikipedia page for the Prius, in 2016, Japan was ~70% of the market, the US ~25%, the rest of the world (primarily Europe) ~5%. IMO, I think this explains why Toyota decided to style the car more for Japanese tastes than American.

This. The Hyundai Ioniq sales for less, and comes with a Lithium-ion battery in it's Hybrid that's twice the capacity of the Lithium-ion in the Prius. Either Hyundai is losing a ton of money (which is probably the case) trying to sale their Hybrid, or Toyota doesn't care enough to sale the Prius anymore by taking a haircut on it's price to move sales.

It’s funny when I hear people say gas is cheap.

I guess only California and Hawaii gas are expensive cause I am playing 3.15 a gallon, but 2 months ago it’s almost $4 a gallon. I don’t get people who have pickup trucks pumping $90 a for a full tank. Yikes.

 

Achieve 0-60 mph in 5 seconds and the problem solved.
