I rolled up to the charger with 0.1 miles of EV range left this morning. I was actually surprised I made it since it's 28 degrees (F) outside.

You do realize that the gas engine MUST RUN some to keep the fuel fresh......right ??

If it doesn't run much in "normal" use, eventually it WILL run some no matter what you do.

So why not just let it run some during normal use and then don't fret about it ??

Sometimes you can be your own worst enemy.

It's mostly just a silly thread where people can share stories of their self-imposed range anxiety.

The engine runs plenty. I usually go through a tank of gas about every 1200 miles. Probably 1/3 or my miles are in HV mode. Otherwise I would have bought a pure EV. I've never seen it run just for the sake of keeping fuel fresh, because it runs for lost of other reasons first.

I try to keep the number of cycles on the engine low. Warming up probably isn't great for it, but once it's warm, might as well use it. If it had switched over to HV in the parking lot, it would have had to go through a warm-up cycle while parked, which feels like a waste (even if the energy goes into the battery). Or I could have shut it off before it warmed up, but that would leave condensation where it shouldn't be. I considered switching to HV mode a few miles away, but with 10% battery left and 2 or 3 miles to go I thought I might be able to make it.

But the engine gets used so little compared to any other car that it will probably last forever no matter what I do.

    Oh I understand perfectly.

People these days seem to obsess over tiny details of crap that doesn't really matter........but then give little to no time in researching things that can mean life or death.

The thing I don't understand is WHY ???

OK, I understand that.......if they really are spending time on stuff that really matters too.

Do you also have 72 thousand posts on any forums about something that really matters ??
    (Sorry, couldn't resist.)

The one reason I can for PIP range anxiety: if the engine comes on say within a block of your destination. Firstly because it's frustrating, and secondly because it the cold-start-and-almost-immediate-shut-down scenario, that seems to lead to engine shake/knock at the next start-up.

I wonder if anyone with a PIP has that cold-start shake while they're underway, when they ran low on charge?

not me, but i never shut down until the engine does

i was hoping prime would have the ford button that allows an extra draw on the battery every so often for just such instances

That would be nice. The Prime saves enough charge to keep the car going while the engine warms up. Sometimes that's enough to get to a charger. Or often the case if I park at a trailhead in the mountains, that would be enough to get going down the hill.

Doesn’t Really matter once the engine has started, does it?

ironically, it just happened to me. took my wife for her eye checkup. i thought i had plenty of charge, but on the way home, had less miles left than expected. started slowing down, took a side road, came up my street with .3, .2, then .1 way too far away. somehow nursed her home and into the garage, hit the power button quick, before the engine fired!
