it will have active cooling, but not liquid cooling, which is unnecessary for the application

So the rear transaxle will be grease splash cooled?

    The battery is perfectly reliable,
perhaps I wasn’t clear in my question, I’m mainly interested in the rear transaxle configuration.

I think a rear transaxle pic or diagram could help answer that question too.

I wonder too what the cars “stance” will look like.

New Toyota Prius Hybrid AWD-i revealed | Autocar

Claim is it doesn’t affect the boot, but maybe the spare is?

If it fits into the same place as the previous 2wd rear beam that makes things more interesting.

In any event the spare isn’t mentioned anywhere that I can tell.

Ah well have to wait for someone to buy one.

AWD-e have been available in other countries in the past, I think? Did they have a spare tire?

Tideland posted illustrations of the system on the old thread, not sure if the US system will be the same or larger but again no mention of a spare.

But those systems do look very interesting 6B490B02-5213-4AE3-80C2-FD5DF13C1170.png

The diagram says "Same sized luggage compartment as 2WD vehicle equipped with spare tire"... Humm, I read this means they used spare tire space for the rear motors, but did not sacrifice the cargo space?

I believe the 2019 uses a different type of rear motor though.

our awd hybrid Lexus SUV was quite the thing, WAY back when it 1st came out. We took delivery in 2006 - but it was built/delivered to the dealer in 2005. Then after that, they offered up the AWD version in the hihy .... SO - when the shrink down Prius version finally gets to the dealership, we're looking somewhere around what .... 1½ decades after the fact? Probably just me .... but, rather than feel all the hubbub - anyone else thinking,
"this isn't anything new - is it?"
Here's hoping the AWD Rav4 won't take 1½ decades to get the plug. After all - it seems manufacturers are getting out of sedans as fast as they can.

Looks like the rear inverter might take up the spare tire space, but it is a small, low power motor, and the other components should match in size

Why bother making a different one for a refresh when one is already available?

It's marketing, and most people are clueless about what other markets get.

Isn’t induction what Tesla used on the Model S? It’s basically a cheaper, lower power version of the expensive front permanent magnet motors. That’s fine since the rear wheels won’t be fed high torque or power. No point putting an expensive motor there.

Yeah olde induction can put down plenty of power because you can send power beyond peak saturation at lower efficiency.
That is one advantage of induction there are no magnets to demagnetize so
Both field and aramature current can be controlled independently but you do need good cooling if you field weaken into more power.

Another is there are no rare earths.
