I was leasing my 2015 Prius. After the three years I decided to buy the car it was just under 36,000 miles. I bought the Platinum service agreement. It's a hundred thousand miles or eight years. Two questions I guess, does it just mean to a hundred thousand or is it a hundred thousand on top of the original 36? The reason I asked that is when I bought my 2008 I had the balance of the warranty to a hundred thousand miles and when I bought extra it was mileage I bought, another 25,000 so I had coverage to 125k on the car. The other thing is I'm looking at the book and I'm very confused it seems like nothing is covered unless I'm misunderstanding things. Has anybody had to use the Platinum? And have you had any troubles and does anybody know the major things that covers? I'm not worried about what I paid for it because a battery would probably more than pay for what I paid. That is if the batteries covered.
only the book can tell you the answers. if it is confusing, i suggest cancelling. they will just use the confusion to deny warranty.
Upgraded service agreements and extended warranties are sold at a profit not at a loss... These products are primarily sold to car owners who lack basic maintenance skills and don't understand they're paying way, way, way too much for how little is actually offered. Having lots of DIY auto repair skills, or just a reliable family mechanic, who's also a friend that you know and trust is the most important part to keeping vehicle maintenance costs as low as possible. Upgraded service agreements and extended warranties are the exact opposite of that...
I don't know about your particular service agreement or warranty or whatnot, but AFAIK the original/manufacturer warranty on the hybrid system at least covers first 100k miles or 8 years. In general I would suggest steering clear of dealer-offered extended warranties; most everything I've read says that something like 2/3rds of drivers who opted to pay for an extended warranty/"service agreement" will *never* have to use it and that the majority of those who have had a repair done under extended warranty still ended up losing money overall (i.e. the cost of the warranty itself outweighed the costs of repairs done)
#1. I have never purchased or paid for an extended warranty. BUT... I don't automatically default to the opinion that people shouldn't. If they offer you peace of mind? Then they can be worth it to the individual. In this case however? The key is knowing what you are paying for, before you've actually purchased it. If you are nervous or unsure about what you have purchased? Then IMO the rule of thumb is you probably shouldn't of purchased it. I can't answer specifics about a dealer offered warranty or warranty program. The OP should be able to get information about exactly what is covered and how it extends or overlaps original coverage's. According to the OP... You should be able to find exact clarification. If not? Or if you are still not happy or confused? Then my opinion, would be look at the possibility of cancelling it and getting a refund. IMO if the warranty coverage is not giving you peace of mind, and actually doing just the opposite? Then you aren't getting the best possible value one can get from an extended warranty.
Thanks all, I used to work on my own cars, but the Prius scares me, that's why I thought it was a good idea. But I will talk to the dealership and maybe try to get a refund.
