Ugh, I was finally getting around to ordering the "NEW CABIN AIR FILTER FITS LEXUS RX350 BASE 2016-2017 87139-0E040 87139-58010" that people in this thread said fits same as the OEM , and the company wants to charge $40 shipping to Hawaii. Guess I'll just vacuum out the old filter.

Great find. The two I bought fit Gen 3 even though the site said it fit the Gen 4. Same issue with the stupid plastic piece.

I will try one of these and see what happens.

Yep, my dealer tried to pull that and I checked it when I got home and it was good for another two years at least. If it is covered with leaves then it is time to R&R the beast.

Well, I went off half-cocked: @Rangerdavid had a rodent nest of some sort in his air filter, it eventually was revealed.

But yeah, for normal use, I can't get to strident about changing the cabin filter. I think it helps too, that we rarely use AC, and just run with the whole system off and windows rolled down some, half the year.

The filter is before the evaporator and heater core.

To anyone who says these filters are useless you have never dealt with a clogged up evaporator core. It is the most expensive and hardest component of a vehicle AC system to fix. Each leaf that gets caught in your filter is a leaf that would have gotten caught in the evaporator.

Ok so I installed the TYC 800208C. Was a perfect fit no worries there. However one observation noted, the original filter was less dense than the new one I replaced it with. I hope it won't restrict the AC output too much.

I did notice that the Gen 4 filter fits better in the slot than the Gen 3 filter in my 2011. Gen 4 fits the slot perfectly where the Gen 3 looks really strange.

When does Toyota recommend replacement of cabin and engine air filter?

    Thanks

    For a Gen 4 or your 2014 Prius c?
Maintenance intervals are listed in the manuals supplied with the vehicle & available online from Toyota.

Thanks. I found the supplemental warranty and maintenance guide.

    For a 2014 Prius C its 30,000 miles.

Might depend on the gen? I've done spreadsheets for the US schedules, for regular 3rd and 4th gen Prius. Mainly because it's impossible to answer questions like yours without painstakingly poring through the dang event-by-event description Toyota uses.

FWIW, here's third and fourth gen Prius, likely c is the same:

Cabin filter: first change at 15K miles or 18 months
Engine filter: first change at 30K miles or 36 months

For both: every 30K miles or 36 months thereafter

Personally: I would just inspect them, change when warranted.

I've yet to change either, at 8 years and 78K kms. That's pretty low mileage though, and we're up north, west coast (air coming off the Pacific), and the cabin filter sees little use through summer: we rarely use the AC and just turn the vent system off, roll the windows down as needed.

I had a 2000 VW TDI. We did

    10,000 oil filter (still good)
    20,000 fuel filter (N/A)
    40,000 Engine & cabin

Many of us felt 20k short for FF and 40k long for Air F, so we did 30k for both and that's what I plan on for my 2014 Prius C.

To be clear, 30k air and cabin on the Prius.

    15K is absurd, I'll inspect.

I put this is mine last spring (about 22 euros + shipping).
Really sturdy and is about 4 times thicker than the original one.
This one goes in without the toyota plastic bracket. In wintertime I change back to the Toyota original one and in summer during allergy season I use this one. Not sure if the airflow is as fast with this one though.
I vacuum the cabin air filter and the engine air filter once or twice per year, really easy to do yourself.

You are supposed to use the bracket from the old filter with the new filter element.

I know. But this Mahle filter is very large, thick and rigid and it fits perfectly without the bracket.
(It is model specific for Prius).
I just keep the original one in its bracket and replace the whole thing with this one.
    Fits perfect.

Is is specifically for the 2016+ Prius? The older Prius used a different cabin filter.

Not sure - the MAHLE part number quoted shows that it's for PRIUS v (or called + in some countries). It may still fit, but without the casing.

Fits perfect without the bracket. This is what it looks like. Had this one in from April-August this year. It is a lot thicker and with 4 layers of filters. I'm gonna put the same one back in at the end of March next year. The arrow means airflow, so it's the other way around than the Original filter. prius_mahle_filter.jpg

If it is for the Prius v, it was not designed to fit the 2016 Prius.
