There are a lot of threads about grinding noises while breaking but I haven't found anything similar to what I'm experiencing yet, So here goes. 2007 Prius, 304,000 miles. No rust on discs, pads are at about half life. No noise while braking at 35+ mph. Below 35 mph it starts grinding. Sometimes it doesn't grind at low speeds? I'm at a loss. I've read that the transmission could be failing but there are no lights on the dash and it still drives completely normal. Any ideas?
Get up to a higher speed and put it in neutral and hit the brakes. In neutral the car only uses the regular brakes, no regeneration braking. Let us know what happens.
When I get up to speed, put it in neutral and hit the brakes, the sound is still there. I'm hoping that's a good sign.
yeah, should be all pads in neutral as bob said. maybe jack up each wheel and spin, while someone applies the brake
Could be the trans there's been a few failures of the differential section. Thats strictly mechanical and would not throw any codes. I'll tell you what I tell everyone who has something like this but I doubt anyone follows my advice. Get the car up on a lift and change the trans fluid only because you want to harvest the fluid and look carefully at it for bits of metal etc. if the axle has failed it will be nasty in there. And you can check and see if its low or out of fluid. Take the fill bolt out and stick your finger in there. Should feel fluid. Fluid may leak out of the inner cv joint seal where both inner's exit the diff section of the trans. If the side of the diff is wet with red fluid from leaking seals then you know. Seal failure is caused by bad vibrating inner joints beating up the seal. Seen a few here on that also. The trans dump bolt is magnetic so if you see a chia pet hanging off it well then you know some metal is getting eaten up in there. If fluid looks good nice and clean throw 4 quarts of WS fluid back in and go on your way.
I had a clunking noise while I used the brakes a few years ago, I never figured out what it was & its gone now. Good luck!
I have a 2004 Prius and had a grinding noise when braking at low speeds. It turned out to be that a screw had come out from the wheel area. I don't know much about cars but my mechanic had put the car on the lift to check to see if my brakes were bad and he noticed the missing screw. Not sure if this is your problem but it wont hurt to check. A part of less than one dollar could have had a bad outcome. Hope this helps.
FYI/IMHO Okay front brakes are a straight forward inspect and repair ….plenty of public comments and how to on that topic.... Transaxle/Transmission harder to inspect and detect ….Lusc Garage made comments on final drive failure
