    Should be interesting once it's released. Wonder if this'll spook GM, Ford, or Ram to release a plug-in truck. Especially once Workhorse and Tesla release their EV pick up trucks.

    Also, I have no interest in 5 seater pickup truck. I still don't understand why people want second row on a pickup. I want a pickup with 2 seater or 3 seater with single row bench seat and a long bed that can haul DRYWALL (8'x4'). ;)

    They seem to have concentrated and refined all the things i don't want in a pickup truck. (This is a simple admission that I'm not the target market for that item.)

    That said, I can easily imagine them selling a few hundred units a year in California.

    It would be nice if this inspired an established truckmaker to roll out electrified models.

    One of the nice things about the big three trucks is that there are huge loads of accessories available for them. Just piles of possibilities.

    I think if Rivian was serious about offering a pickup truck as a pickup truck (rather than pickup truck as SUV with a bed) they would have copied the bed dimensions from one of the others to gain accessory compatibility- and touted it in the press release.

    we went from a ranger (too small) tho a dakota (just right). two fold down opposing seats behind two half doors, and enough space to keep things out of the elements when necessary.
    bed holds 4x8 sheets, but i have three 2x4's that keep them above the wheel wells.

    downside is 18mpg with a six cylinder, but i only put a thousand miles a year on. probably loan it out more than i use it these days.

    Bravo, my ram ecodiesel gets 23-26mpg, I want the interior space for the dogs, the towing for the horses, the safety for me.
    I'd be happy with a plug-in that got 60mpg+ and could tow, that would take away range anxiety, but pure electric would work.

    Not being a proprietary vehicle like any Tesla would work.

    I feel the same way about my Prius... Give me a bench seat up front and nothing in back but a truck bed, camper shell and a few long range battery packs. :)

    Lol "ecodiesel" that gets 25mpg... Yet another way to make america great again, not. Detroit has a lot of growing up to do... Sad that it always takes a major economic crisis / bankruptcy for them to get serious about changing their ways.

    A page out of Elon's book. Base price $61k+ with high end models f1rst and gads only know what they are priced at or when they really will be delivered. Promised in '20 and '21. Nice looking. Servicing unknown. Parts availability unknown. Delivery model unknown.

    I focus on these things that the big 5 car manufacturers have in place already because I've bought several new first months models before with generally really bad results. I've been looking to replace a '12 car and the last 2 candidates (CRV, Model 3) have all flunked my "do I want to own this now" test very badly based on supporting forum feedback from owners in these areas.

    What was wrong with Model 3 to cause it to flunk? You'd think after the Model S and Model X this isn't a new design in its first months? From what I've read, there's no issues other than some minor cold weather challenges, as well as braking issues with software that was updated and saw Consumer Reports re-testing it and giving it the highest safety rating of any passenger vehicle ever.

    Recall the widely hyped Tesla $35k price before rebate. Rivian is doing the same thing hyping the high end specs but also the least capable model's price. There are three battery capability grades and a significant difference in acceleration and range between the $61k version and the one whose specs are stressed in the press release. So forgive me if I compare the introduction scenario with that followed by Tesla. Not that there is anything wrong or illegal, just not as good as a careless reading of the press release would have you believing. And not available now.

    The current Tacoma is about the same size as the old full size half ton pickup. Everything is getting super sized these days.

    Possible you missed the news.
    Ford and now GMC have dropped most sedans in favor of trucks, and Ford and GMC trucks get 12-16 MPG, and Ford and GMC are both releasing 6 cylinder Diesel's following Ram's 2015 release of the Ecodiesel, which gets 26-28MPG.

    Did you miss the 100% increase in MPG's vs other available trucks, or did you miss the part about Ford and GMC dropping passenger cars because people are buying trucks?

    Or are you not aware that Ford and GMC are also moving to 6 cylinder Diesel's?

    Anyway, an electric truck that can tow and isn't a vaporware Tesla is enticing.

    Tesla sold 211 cars in China last month, 70% lower than the same month a year ago, Tesla dropped the price of the X and S, but......China's 40% tariff on import cars is burdensome, oops, bad timing for Tesla.

    The Rivian R1T is exciting, I'd love to see Ford, GMC and Ram go Hybrid, electric from 0-12mph would make for decent MPG figures, work up to plug-in variations, the 6 cylinder diesels are towing 10,000-12,000 pounds, give them a 50-60 mile electric range and wow...

    Considering the definition of "full-size" has grown, I wonder if this company studied Toyota's failed attempt at a "mid-sized: pickup, the
    T-100.
    It was produced from 1993 to 1998 and discontinued due to low sales.

    In early 1999, it was replaced by the 2000 Toyota Tundra full sized 1/2 ton pickup. The Tundra later grew to compete with the Ford F-250 series and the Tacoma grew to replace the Tundra.

    With those MPG figures, you must be thinking of Toyota's full size pick up, or just the city numbers for Ford and GM.

    Those are the thirstiest 4WD models on a quick grab. The 2019 Chevy will be better with dynamic cylinder deactivation. The majority of F150 sales are now a V6.

    A small block diesel makes sense for a truck. It just took a forgien controlled Ram to get Ford and GM to finally listen to their customers. FCA got caught cheating with the Ecodiesel, and no longer offer it.

    Ford has a hybrid F150 planned for 2020; it might be a PHEV.
    The actual EPA designations haven't changed much. I think compact, midsize, and large for trucks got condensed into small and large though.

    The first Tundra was on the small side of 'full size', and was the most efficient pick up in that class. Now it is the largest and least. It is big enough to do much of what a 2500 truck can do, but it is still mostly cross shopped with 1500's.

    The Tacoma might be the size of the old Tundra, but it is still a midsize that competes with the Colorado, upcoming Ranger, and even the Ridgeline.
