My recently bought 2015 Prius Plug In just reached 57K miles, a message showed up: "Maintenance Required Soon". What kind of maintenance is this referring to, and if I can do it myself? Thanks!
This shows up 4500 miles after the last service and the maintenance reminder has been reset. This happening at 57K miles would indicate that the previous owner did not follow the specified 5k service interval. If the services were done by Toyota you should be able to find out whether the 55K or 60K serive is due either through the Toyota owners site or a dealership.
check the maintenance guide in your o/m. at 60k, you will need tire rotation (optional) oil and filter, air and cabin filters check/clean/replace, brake inspection and caliper slide pins lubed, and a bunch of other checks. not a bad time to consider a tranny fluid drain and fill as well.
The Toyota maintenance reminder is just a dumb odometer counter. As @bisco you need to check in the Warranty and Maintenance Guide Booklet, it's the slim pamphlet the accompanies the (thicker) Owner's Manual. Hopefully in the glove box. If not, you can download a pdf version at Toyota Tech Info (google this), in the Manuals section. All the services are time or miles, whichever comes first. Some of them are a bit absurd, for example the driver's floor mat check. Also checking all the suspension bolts: there's no all-in-one-place instruction on which and how, so I think that's largely the lawyers talking. There's a few missing as well: Toyota USA says nothing about brake fluid changes, while Toyota Canada says every 3 year or 48K kms. Nobody says anything about tranaxle fluid changes, it's supposedly "lifetime". I would advocated a change asap, then maybe every 60K miles. Use only Toyota ATF WS fluid. I've done all our basic maintenance, from day one. If you do, I'd suggest: 1. Keep a detailed log, paper and/or text file. 2. Keep all receipts. 3. Buy from a dealership parts department as much as practical, to leave a better "paper trail". Register with them too, so they can track your purchases.
FWIW, ours has had two fluid changes now, but even so: I've been hearing the ocassional "grunt" coming from somewhere in front, when braking, just prior to complete stop. There's a TSB acknowledging some defect I think. Heads up: looks like safety-recalled brake accumulators on eBay | PriusChat
