Tire pressure gauges, I bought 2 new ones, reading is way off from my old one

I am doing good Bisco, thank you! Except for the Oregon State Beavers and the University of Oregon Ducks football teams seem determined to make it a very sad football season.

We have had a very dry fall, which is concerning, but also a bit nice....can't have Oregon without rain, so I guess I wish that it would start to rain SOON>

Finally had a chance to test and compare all of my collection of tire gauges.
Here is the line-up:

Husky Digital Tread Depth and Tire Gauge: model:568-435
Accutire Digital Tire Gauge: model MS-4021
PCL Passenger Tire Pressure Gauge: model TPG1H17
Milton Single Chuck Head Pencil Tire Pressure Gauge: model S-921
Tru-Flate Standard Tire Gauge: model 17-509

Husky digital gauge is 2-in-1 tread depth and tire pressure gauge I have been using day to day. Tru-Flate pencil tire pressure gauge is very old (over 20 years?) and have not been used recently. Other three gauges were all recently purchased from Amazon.

As it turned out: 4 out of 5 gauges gave very similar results. Tru-Flate was so old and rubber seating was brittle no longer sealing the air.

As far as operation is concerned Husky was very easy to use and reading was clear as long as there is adequate lighting. Accutire had bit difficult seating but backlit reading can help seeing in dark. PCL had the most secure seating but metal indicator bar's tics are very difficult to read especially in dim light. Milton also had very secure seating and white nylon indicator bar with red edge on the body was very easy to read. I also have a dial type gauge, but did not test on this round.

When I compared the tire pressure measurement by the tire gauge to aftermarket external TPMS and internal OEM TPMS, the value at the valve (external) was slightly lower than internal pressure by ~1.4psi.

Conclusion: It seems most of tire gauges in price range in $5-$17 range when new are accurate enough for monitoring tire pressure within +/- 1psi. Measurement of pressure at the valve (external) seems to be lower ~1.5psi compared to internal pressure by OEM TPMS. As Husky digital gauge has tread depth gauge as well as pressure, this is the one I am going to use day to day and I will keep one of mechanical gauge as a backup.

 

For those w/ Costco membership, conduct your test comparison here. Your local Costco Tire store will probably have the same digitally controlled inflator, mounted on an interior wall near a bay opening, as the Costco Torrance store. The desired air pressure is increased/decresed by an up/down arrow button, in 0.5psi increments. You take the hose and attach it to the wheel valve stem. When the pre-set pressure is reached, the machine will beep. Disconnect the hose w/ minimal air loss and immediately measure the psi w/ your digital, analog, etc device. The one closest to the Costco pre-set pressure will be the most accurate one. This will be the best test b/c you are comparing your devices against a known psi.

I assumes the Costco machine is accurate b/c it is a commercial product, that probably cost a lot of money, and has a very accurate rating. The consumer OTC gauges will have accuracy all over the place.
