2010 Prius Engine Swap 1.8L to 1.5L?

    Hey PriusChat,

    I have a 2010 Toyota Prius II and I slung a piston rod which blew a whole in my engine block. My engine is a 1.8L. I am in the market for a new engine, 1.8L cost 1300 and up. I found a 1.5L for a 2013 prius that cost $877. Can I put this 1.5L in my prius that has a 1.8L in it? If so will there be any set backs, issues, performance downgrades, or just anything in general that I should be concerned with? Thanks in advance.

    Some real questions:
    • How many miles on your Prius?
    • Where did you find the 1.5 L engine?
    • Have you bought it yet?
    • Will you be doing the engine swap yourself?
    • Ever done serious DIY jobs before?
    The 1.5L engines were in the c as @bisco notes above, so I’d keep looking.

    If pushing my little prius on the highway back and forth to college means NASCAR then yes lol. Btw I do live 20 minutes from the speedway.

    But to answer the questions. My prius has 156,000 miles.

    I found the 1.5L on automix

    I haven't purchased it yet

    Me and my dad will be doing the swap. I haven't done an engine swap before but my dad has done a couple. He's 1 of those jack of all trades guys. I have messed around a little with DIY with cars but nothing as extensive as a engine swap.

    You’d be taking a substantial compatibility risk: even if you could install a 1NZ-FXE engine and connect it to your car’s P410 hybrid transaxle, which is different from the P510 in a Prius c—and I have no idea if that’s possible—the 1NZ-FXE engine control module (ECM) may not work with the power management control ECU in your car, which has firmware that was written and tested to work with the 2ZR-FXE engine and its characteristics.

    Remember: a modern car, especially a hybrid vehicle, is a rolling collection of computer systems, sensors, and actuators that have to work together, as much as it is an automobile in the traditional sense.

    Even if it all could work, I imagine you’d have to spend much more than the difference in engine costs on the other parts that would have to be replaced or fabricated. Does the $877 engine come with an ECM, for example?

    The Prius C is an entirely different car, there is no interchangeability with the Prius.

    One thing that's doable is to swap in a Gen 4 Prius engine, with some modifications. Have a look at the link:

    Better make some popcorn and find a comfy chair: there's 15 episodes, each about 20 minutes. The swap in the video is into a Prius v, but the principals are the same, and this is the second time he's done this swap: first time was on a regular, 3rd gen Prius.

    The main advantage over using a 3rd gen engine: 4th gen engines are lower miles, more prevalent, and cheaper, at least at present.

    Good information.... What years cover the 4th gen cover. You are correct 1.8L 2010 2011 engines are very expensive.
