Anybody installed Oil catch can on Gen 2 ? any instructions would be helpful.

    I saw this oil catch can which i want a install in my gen 2 prius. Any instructions would be helpful here. Thank You

    Gen 2 has Positive Crankcase Ventilation, so probably useful. For starters: remove the engine air intake paraphernalia, push the throttle blade open and look through, see if there's an oil pool below? Better: remove the throttle body, to get a better look. You should be able to leave all the coolant lines attached I think.

    If you decide to install an Oil Catch Can, in a nutshell, what you do is splice it in, in series, along the line running from the Positive Crankcase Ventilation valve and the intake manifold.

    Even though it's 3rd gen, I'd read through @danlatu 's thread:

    There's a couple of relevant 2nd gen Repair Manual sections attached. I would not assume all the removal they recommend is necessary for access. It may be, but take it with a grain of salt.

    Haven't yet, though I've thought about it for some time :whistle:

    Unsure if mine would catch much, as I've yet to notice moisture on either end of the PCV hose. Maybe if I actually replaced the PCV instead of cleaning it there would be more blow by :confused:

    Blaze the trail for other gen2's, and please post photos with any caught fluids (y)

    Probably not as necessary on the Gen2 as the PCV valve is on the top of the engine.

    But only one way to find out(y).

    I can guarantee there’s a little pool of oil in the bottom of the intake because that’s normal. That’s not coming
    From the pvc but the atkisson cycle mode of the engine. It’s there when the car is new because I bought my 07 new. It’s because
    The expansion ratio of the atkisson cycle pushes charge back into the intake.
    The intake manifold is designed with a large integral plenum or surge tank to accommodate this expansion.

    The turd gen catch can crowd feel the lower-on-the-block PCV location is a design fail. They may be on the right track, I'm undecided and still no catch can on my turd. PCV on the valve cover and I don't really see a catch can worth the time on a port injection engine.

    Prior to my (third gen) OCC install I had at least 1/8" of stuff, in the intake manifold's "sump", below the throttle body. Which begs the question: how much of the oil/gas/water vapour pulled through by the PCV valve did not settle there, instead passed through, back into the combustion chambers.

    I had a look recently, about a year post OCC install, the sump is clear. It has an oil "sheen", but that's all: no swimming pool. And yeah that seems to originate as spit-back from the intake ports: when I last had the manifold off (a second time, soon after first cleaning) I could see a drop or two of oil at the threshold of each intake port.

    In a year, and around 10K kms, I've collected about 80 cc's.

    I was trying to sell my son on an OCC for his new Mazda CX-5 (port injected only), but he got cold feet. Maybe in a year we can check the intake manifold see what it looks like. I have one ready to go, lol.
