My 2012 PIP was involved in an accident which damaged my front bumper and driver's front wheel, and driver's door; repairs were well over $15,000!!! My AAA insurance went to the moon, but now after some 6 years with no claims, and with $1000 deductibles on everything, I'm paying $1100/year for my 2017 Prime Advanced. Note that Consumers Report suggests reducing and/or eliminating the collision coverage on your over-5 year-old car; Allstate would total ALL my 5+ year old cars after accidents (44 years with them; very cheap, but terrible company; accidents, in all those cases were not judged to be my fault; most were rear enders; some from others running red lights or Stop Signs). When Allstate rates became higher than AAA, changed over. Prius rates do seem higher, even than my EXTREME high performance Type R. It's very hard to compare insurance rates due to car pricing, new vs older, location, miles driven, events encountered, etc.
I truly HATE insurance companies, much more than dealers; many of the latter out here in Socal are fine.

We pay for insurance to limit our financial exposure. If you can afford to replace your car, don't buy collision insurance. What is the book value of the old car, and can you afford to buy a (near) exact replacement? If so, reconsider why you're buying insurance to cover a loss you can afford to take. Take a look at the deductable amount. If you can afford a higher deductable, why pay more for insurance for the lower deductable? It's all about the individual financial situation of each of us. I don't want a higher loss (that I can afford), but do I want to save money on insurance even more?

That is generally a good advice, but individual case need be considered more in detail. I kept full collision and comprehensive coverage on our 9 years old car with no deductible until it was totalled by one of our kid driving it. I could afford the replacement cost of the car and I could afford higher deductible, but I decided to keep the coverage, because it cost me only ~$15/month more. That's only $180/year for the coverage. After the car was 5 years old, I paid ~$720 more than if I had dropped the coverage then. In the end, when the car was totalled, I received $4700 for the value of the car. Better still, I bought back the totalled vehicle with only cosmetic damages at wholesale price of $800. $3900 in my pocket, and I still have completely functional vehicle despite beaten up.

I live in Oregon too, and have USAA, my six-month rate total is about $550 with the same $500 deductible… How are you getting yours so cheap? I have a perfect driving record and live in Portland.

Yes, only collision. Our total is about $600, and that's with 300/500 liability underneath an umbrella policy.

My USAA was renewed two weeks ago on my 2017 Advance; $519.59 for 6mo. Live in Beaverton (actually in Aloha). Only one car insured, but also use USAA for homeowners, umbrella and life insurance that might provide a little discount? Been with USAA since 1980.

Yeah that’s about correct with USAA… I know that if we shopped around we could get cheaper rates that there’s absolutely no way to get a better insurance company.

Just an FYI —- It was an $8,000+ repair to repair the front bumper damage on the passenger side when I clipped the flagpole in our driveway and pulled off half the front bumper. I’ll have to find the repair bill and post it sometime. (And it did not even include a rental for the month it sat at the dealers waiting for them to repair it because silly me thought they would know more about the techie car I had... live and learn... )

You were relatively lucky. I've had almost a dozen claims under Allstate; bottom line: terrible company for claims. I had to sue them once to get fair market for a "totaled" Honda Civic VX driven by my son. They totaled car because of air bag triggering: $2500 each to replace AND would not insure car unless airbags replaced. Consumers have NO clue about this disgusting state of affairs. My Prime has something like 12 of the damned things!!
Give me my 3" lap/ 1.5" double shoulder belts like I had in my GTV, but NO, we have NO say in the matter; ridiculous. This is the worst example of technology out of control. I love cars, driving and racing them, and been hit by drunks, trucks (GMC Suburban that ran a red light), rear-ended countless times; GOOD seatbelts make the difference. Look at all the deaths caused by defective airbags; still going on!

Well from different perspective, you were relatively lucky that the deployed airbags on your Civic WAS NOT one of those defective Takata airbags.Luckily I or my family have never been in an accident where airbag deployed. Just like a good insurance, airbag and all the other safety features on modern cars are something you wish you never need to use it, but in case of more serious accident, I am sure glad to have them on board. I just hope they work as intended.;)
