My Prius Prime Drives Itself

It's not perfect. It accelerates faster and slows better in traffic than stock when you unplug the DSU in the glovebox. If you stop with the Toyota system, you have to wait till the car ahead of you starts moving to re-engage the system. This system you can tell the car to move as soon as you stop and it will start moving as soon as the car ahead moves. They're still working on a thing(they call it 'the pedal') that will make the car automatically go on it's own even after it completely stops without having to hit the cruise lever.

The collision system works like normal. The only difference is you have one more screen that lights up and says to BRAKE(the screen on the EON).

 

That's good! What abut Lane Departure Mitigation/Lane Departure Alert? Does this still function even with cruise control turned off?

 

Is anyone mirroring the Eon a la Beat Sonic to the navigation?

 

It is off(not going to beep at you) unless you flip a switch next to the rear view mirror. Flipping the switch makes it go back to completely normal, stock system.

I was excited about this because I drive a lot, but after talking to my insurance agent I unfortunately have decided against it. If anybody is planning to do this mod, I recommend you check with your guy.

 

All I want is little more torque in the stock lane keeping that's already there. I don't mind holding the steering lightly.
I had driven 2017 Acura MDX loaner and that kept the car in lane...

 

Just got this installed and running last night. First test drive was a lot of fun and a little bit of a test of my nerves! Install is easy but could be made easier with a car specific comprehensive write up. All in all not very hard for the prime.

Which boils down to the camera being off, leading to all Safety Sense function that rely on it (eg. pedestrian detection) being nonfunctional.

That's basically the setup for the uber test car crash (that flattened the pedestrian), isn't it?

 

I have this up and running on my Prime. I found that the auto steering features of Open Pilot are better than the stock Toyota Lane Departure Alert, so I don't mind that the stock feature is disabled.

My comment wasn't looking at auto-steering performance (which certainly is better as LDA is *meh*) but to point out that the Pre-Collision System parts that rely on the stock camera (at least the Pedestrian Detection) being nonfunctional/disabled, possibly even disabling stock auto-breaking.

Should things go wrong, which I hope they don't, this could lead to unwelcome legal/financial consequences (depending on local legislation this can include insurance denying coverage and/or the driver being awarded real time in a correctional facility for gross negligence) and possibly destroy peace of conscience (at least for non-sociopaths).

It would be less of an issue would the system just add additional functionality, but it neutering approval relevant security features...

Chris (PHV PLS) you don't have Driver Monitor engaged. Currently, OpenPilot is 54% completed. When Openpilot is 60% complete, drive monitor will not be a choice. It will always be engaged. When you start the car EON gives the warning to keep your eyes on the road and hands on the wheel. I drive with drive monitor and I think so does Sara B. If you take your eyes off the road for more than 2 seconds openpilot Drive Monitor gives a warning and steering is back in your lap. I drive with my hands off the wheel but ready to react. Sara B Brown is driving openpilot as safe as it was intended. Sara B is one smart woman. I have been driving OP in cities and on interstates for 5 months. Openpilot has bugs but is fun to drive but only 54% complete.

 

We all use OP for different reasons, just like our cars. Theirs no rite or wrong way.. just like how I track my car that isn’t meant to but I do it anyways lol

SoonTM it’ll be available full time driver monitoring once all the quirks get worked out with the sun and the nighttime drives lol

 

Right now OpenPilot is basically an advanced adaptive cruise control. Chris don't hype it as something more and by all means, enjoy your ride.

After 5 months and about 15k mi, I have grown fond of this feature. On the rare occasion that it is not available to me, I miss it. It is ideal for hypermiling behind big trucks. It has evolved quite a bit in the 5 months that I have been using it. With each step in that evolution, I have become more comfortable with it. I use it almost all the time on the freeway, which is 95+% of the time. I use it on large surface streets, but not much for in town with a lot of lights, and stop signs. But if the light is a long one, I will engage it to hold the brake. For me, I would only consider a Prime with Openpilot, or a Model 3 with Autopilot. One of those is a little more expensive than the other.

Driver attention monitoring works, and I have tested it on several occasions. Some mountain curves are a challenge, so I just help it along a little. Most of the time, I just sit back and watch. You do have to learn the idiosyncrasies, but there are not many. For me, it is an extension of DRCC. Just like with DRCC, I need to pay attention all the time and be prepared to take action. It is a driver aid, like cruise control. Like cruise control, and DRCC, it makes the drives even more less stressful. YMMV.

P.S. - They just came out with new hardware that reduces the cost to about $750.

 

Prime8 have you tried the new stop and go that is on Erich Moraga's fork? It makes the town driving a pleasure. No more disengagement at stoplights.

 

Does this work in all models of the prius prime? Even the plus?

 

Loaded it today, but have not had a chance to try it out yet. The majority of my driving is 65 on the straight flat freeway for hours on end, very little in stop and go. But, it will come in handy, and I am looking forward to it.
