You shouldn't over do it. A cycle on the cells is a cycle, so less is more as long as the battery is performing well. Here is our recommended service interval:
How frequently should I use the Prolong Battery Charger/Discharger on my hybrid battery? - Hybrid Automotive

Thank you for replying, I did not discharge it, just do the grid charge, is it good ?
Another question : I bought a grid charger for 2010 model, now do I only buy a discharge ? Do I still need replace the hardness ? Thanks

On the website they sell the Intelligent Discharger separately ;).

It works with the harness you have already installed :).

I’d stop charging it up so often as there are only so many times you can do this;).

Good luck and keep us posted (y).

I think this is an AWESOME alternative to purchasing a "reconditioned" or new HV battery! I sure wish I could do it.
Why can't I do it you ask?
#1. I have no one to help me.
#2. No garage or covered area to work in.
#3. No mechanically inclined children to do it for me either....
#4. I'm not sure that I'd know what I'm doing. Just disassembling the interior panels, back seats and keeping track of all the bolts intimidates me. IF I had a step by step video (like on YouTube) I might be able to do it.....then I'd scrap all the other reasons.

The closest dealer that I'm aware of is in Boulder. That's only 97 miles away however......but you'd think with as big as the area is that I live in, there would be someone to install it. :( Not according to the Hybrid Automotive website though.
I guess it wouldn't hurt to call around to a few reputable shops and see if they would do it first of all and then what they'd charge. Doesn't hurt to ask, right?

Do any of your non mechanically inclined children live close and have access to a garage? If so, that might be an end around if this is still something you would consider as I’m sure they wouldn’t mind helping their parent out ;).

Call Paul and see what he has to say. I’m sure he’d install the harness for you (or on Hybrid Automotive’s website they have step by step pictures). Once that’s done, the process is easy:).

Clean the hv battery fan while this work is occurring for peace of mind;).

Good luck and keep us posted (y).

    +1, @Raytheeagle.

The harness really isn't hard to install if you don't have any physical handicaps and you follow the excellent directions provided at the Hybrid Automotive website.

my hybrid automotive kit is on the way. My battery seems to be fine, 2008 with 131k miles. the reason i got this is because sometimes in traffic the battery shows in the purple. probably 80% of the time it is in blue or green. but the purple started worrying me. This is a new to me car and i am also new to the Prius. I am kinda worried about the amount of time people are showing this to take. looks to me like you have to dedicate a whole weekend to this. I m wondering if since my battery is not too bad, maybe i should just do the one cycle. I am hoping it comes with some instructions so i would know if i need to do the 3 times or not......

I’d start with just a top end balance;).

This will take less than 24 hours and you’ll see how your battery responds :).

We’re here to answer any questions you have ;).

Good luck and keep us posted (y).

Unfortunately no garages are available either. I will probably have to have someone do it for me, which is ok too. I'll hunt around and see what I can turn up...thanks for the encouragement!

Don't need a garage. I've installed 3 of them and two were in the driveway. IIRC, all you need is 10, 12, & 14 mm sockets, a Phillips screwdriver, a pair of wire strippers, and maybe electrical tape.

Are you aware that 2K1toaster. the importer of Prius battery replacements, is here in Colorado Springs? He may have ideas on local installation.

RoyRose, I had no idea! I am not aware of "who's who" as I'm a newbie...lol

While I've been driving, I do notice that I can get all green bars on the energy monitoring panel, which surprised me! Ofcourse it always drops down to blue bars and generally stays either at half or just 2 bars above half.....pretty good for a 14 year old battery I think!
I'm thinking I may just go ahead and "bite the bullet" and replace the battery in the Spring next year. I hate the thought of paying out so much money, but with a brand new battery I won't have to worry about it again for years to come....

I also wanted to ask anyone who does winter driving, how it goes with the Prius and if you use chains or snow tires; if there's any troubles starting up, etc....I don't know what to expect

Do you mean after the whole reconditioning process is done? I think between the cycles you don't need to wait for discharge.

could you elaborate more on these two sentences. In my understanding, the last charge will be finished and the charger will be unplugged and let the car sit for an hour before test drive it.

A silly question maybe, what is meant by harness?

Just a few questions on battery discharging vs charging vs reconditioning. I haven’t found yet a post that talks about the WHY one would pick one of these products over another and the benefit one would get by choosing each. I have a 2010 w about 115k miles myself btw. From the hybridautomotive website, I am thinking that the “charger” product would probably be best suited for my situation: “The Prolong Battery Charger is designed to be used as preventative maintenance for healthy hybrid batteries. “. I’m not sure what a discharger is and who this is best suited for.

The reconditioning system is composed of a charger, discharger and harness. This is what is usually recommended. Since the intelligent discharger is so new, they still sell the fiddly light bulb discharger.
@Raytheeagle can explain the process better.

Once you complete the last charge cycle, let it sit for at least an hour ;).

The harness is what you connect the hv battery and either the charger or Discharger to;).

On the harness the hv battery fan connection is integrated to make this easier and cleaner:).

    Hope that helps (y).
