Thoughts on this 2013 Toyota Prius 4 and if it's a good deal to purchase?

    There is no cost to transfer the extended warranty.

    She said $700 because that's how much would be left on the extended warranty if they had to keep paying it off themselves. They purchased the extended warranty with the vehicle. Irrelevant now because looking at the details of the extended warranty and it's not worth it for $700.

    These sellers are parents of a friend I went to high school with. So there is nothing shady going on, I trust them.

    Sounded shady to me.
    Usually when you buy an extended warranty it's all wrapped into the entire purchase price of the vehicle, so you're paying for it with within your monthly payments. If the vehicle is paid off..then the warranty is paid off.
    IMO there's a difference between we've belatedly decided the extended warranty adds value to the vehicle therefore we would like to charge you $700 more...and we're asking for $700 to transfer the warranty.

    If the warranty is paid off...and you say no? What happens? Can they (original owners) cancel the warranty and get that $700 rebate?

    And the story is kind of changing isn't it?
    You originally said you were specifically being asked to pay a fee to transfer the warranty. Now it's not a warranty transfer fee, but what they are calculating is the remaining cost they are paying or would have to pay?

    Sorry High School friends parents or not, sounds strange at least to me.

    Yeah, she already paid for the whole extended warranty, they are just wanting to recoup some of that cost I believe. If I say no to the extended warranty, maybe the original owners can cancel the warranty and get the $700 rebate, I'm not sure.

    And the story isn't changing. They always said from the get go if I want to purchase the extended warranty I can, if not I don't have to. Sorry, I never meant there was a fee to pay for transfer the extended warranty. Just $700 for the extended warranty in general what was left.

    But again, I've decided not to purchase the extended warranty when I looked into it and what was on it. It's like only 1 yearsleft on it for regular maintenance 2 years left on it for comprehensive powertrain warranty for everything including electronics, etc.

    But if I don't do the extended warranty, I still get the regular powertrain warranty.

    But that's neither here nor there. I'm just trying to decide if I should buy the vehicle or not for what it is. I'm hesitant based off the price and never having an owned a hybrid before. I'm not a car guy or know much about them at all. Plus I'm scared about the HV battery going out soon and not every mechanic being specialized enough to fix hybrid vehicles. Wondering if I should just go with a more normal vehicle or if this is too good of a deal to pass up.

    Just to compare apples to apples, what other cars are you considering and how long/ how many miles do you want to put on it?

    Thanks for the reply buddy. At this time, I'm not considering any other cars. It's just such a stressful process and I hate car shopping. Absolutely hate it. Not really sure how long or how many miles I want to put on a vehicle I purchase, just obviously wanting it to last for a while.

    Car buying is stressful for sure.

    Some thoughts.

    With the current seller's market for used cars - $12k with such low mileage is probably a good deal. Not sure how much a 2013 Corolla would cost but it probably won't be as well equipped.

    True, replacing the hybrid battery can get expensive but look at the positives. Hybrid batteries are trending cheaper each year and they're only a few hours of labor to replace one. Hybrid batteries usually last at least 200k miles on this forum. The engine should be just broken in at the current mileage. Engines are more expensive to replace on a Prius than a hybrid battery. The Prius transmission is bulletproof if you change the fluid before 100k. It should out last the car. This is not true for most cars. The electronics rarely break down compared to the mechanical parts.

    Comparing Prius vs. Corolla and gasoline @$3/gal means you'll be $3k ahead at 73k miles. There's also less brake maintenance on a Prius. Use that $3k to save up for another hybrid battery.

    My preowned '14 that came with an extended warranty (purchased by the original owner). I was charged $50 from Toyota to take it over. That was it.

    If you call Toyota North America customer service with the VIN#, they will confirm the transfer price. I'm guessing that the current owners might be able to get $700 back for their unused portion. Maybe the customer service rep can confirm if that is correct.

    I would not pay $700- or anything close to it for the remainder of the warranty. I haven't used a penny of my warranty and there's a good chance I won't. I've had to change brake pads, fluids, filters, etc...but none of that is covered under warranty. And if the hybrid battery goes out, the extended warranty doesn't help there, but you still have ~3 years left on the manufacturer warranty. That gives you 3 years of a peace of mind, especially because you'll also have an extended IPM warranty (you can do a search).

    If you buy this Prius, follow up with customer service. If the current owners don't follow the proper procedures to get a partial refund, you might have the extended warranty transferred over after all. Good luck.

    Yeah I already called Toyota and they figured about $700 was left as well. So they aren't lying. And yeah, I'm not taking the extended warranty.

    Just trying to make a decision about buying a Hybrid in general.

    Go to your library and look up the Consumer Reports Used Car reliability reports. The '13 Prius is extremely reliable with most of the components rating as much better than average.

    I purchased a hybrid because I wanted high mpg without having to work hard at it (hypermiling, driving slower than usual, etc...), and the car is a perfect fit for me. Others are very green. What's your reason for a hybrid?

    To be honest, because I'm not a car guy and I am just in need of a vehicle, I have no specific reason for a Hybrid more so than any other vehicle. I just came across this and saw how good of a deal it was and I'm not sure if another deal like this would ever come up. Obviously better MPG is always a great thing but that or because I'm wanting to be green doesn't factor into it. Just being honest.

    I have like one hour to make a decision :(

    Some other things to consider. A hybrid engine runs only 50-60% of the time. Tune ups last twice as long. No belts or pulleys on a Prius. Prius has a better A/C system and less maintenance...

    Hmm, thanks but I thought hybrids have two engines? An electric and gas powered one? So they both only run 50% of the time?

    It's hard to answer without knowing what you're looking for in a vehicle. But there are other vehicles that have more comfortable seats, a higher driving position, more headroom, more cargo space, smaller blind spots, better handling, and quicker acceleration. Most of what I don't like is what one needs to sacrifice to maximize fuel economy.

    But if getting 45-50 mpg doesn't get you excited, it probably won't be worth it. At least you would be covered until '21 for the hybrid battery.

    Thanks and what I mean is, I'm not picky with a car and what I'm looking for in it. I just like it to get me from Point A to Point B and I'm not picky. And yeah, of course getting 45-50 MPG is exciting. I'm just wondering if it's too complicated of a vehicle to own and recognize what stuff on the dashboard means etc. if you aren't a "car guy" per say. When all you've ever used is regular gas powered engines and never owned a Hybrid.

    jags, how much have you driven this car? Enough to get a feel if you'd like it?

    Under warranty, this is a very easy car to own, IMO. But one expensive repair and you'd fall out of love with the car.

    I personally have never driven this car. As I mentioned before, my parents test drove it and said it was fine and it took it a mechanic who approved it saying it looked fine. I've driven in the backseat of a Prius before and it felt fine.

    I would have to drive hours tonight to go look at this car to decide whether or not to purchase it.

    If I do decide to go down there and perhaps purchase it, are you saying to go down to like a AutoZone or O'Reilly and have them test both batteries before purchasing? The 12V and the larger hybrid one? Can they and do they know how to do that? Or do I have to have both batteries tested at a Toyota dealership?

    Again, my dad took it to a mechanic who said it looked great but he didn't check the 2 batteries. But then again, it's only a 2013 with 33,000 miles on it. Just wondering what I should do to have the batteries tested? Do I even need to? Or if I do, can I just go to a Autozone for free or do I have to go to a Toyota dealership and pay lots of money?

    Also, here is an image from the sellers of the dashboard. I noticed a picture of this battery and I'm not sure what that means? It looks depleted and figured it might mean something or not?

    not, that is just the state of charge. the icon goes from full to two bars and everywhere in between. it's a fun thing for newbies, but uninformative.

    auto zone can test the 12v, i wouldn't bother.

    the hybrid battery has 3 more years, testing won't help.
