Six mpg mod previous 42 avg. To 48 avg. Here is the story ,a month ago.. I changed my air filter ,cvt fluid, spark plugs and reset the ecu in my newly acquired gen 2 prius...i Noticed a mpg drop from almost 50 to more like 40 avg. On the mdf display ... The old filter being filled with junk ...set Up this air box mod a few days ago and results are a sure thing ... Its a mod ... Intake hot air & re route and smaller diameter tube to restrict the air slightly less air. Disconnect the cold air tube from the air box find a tube that fits nice and snug INSIDE THE AIR BOX OUTLET ..I USED A 1/8 INCH WALL SHORT PIECE OF RADIATOR HOSE.
You are fooling yourself. The old number on the display was a long term average. If you had just driven the car gently for a few hundred miles that number probably would have gone back up........just like it did after your "modifications".
its a six mile per gallon change but honestly much more power from removing the oem tube from the box is telling me there is something stuck in the tube ..the car had no power before and yes it is more like 7 to 8 mpg extra
its not the hot air intake its acually getting air in there now lol i think i will just keep the tube off ...slightly warmer air for the intake is not a bad thing for mpg. the older cars like sprint and suzuki had this system that attached the air intake to the exhaust manifold for hot air intake,..stock from japan
i would post a picture tried but i am a restricted newbee lol they would not let me upload. until i have 4 posts
really surprised this information about clogged intake tube is not a pinned post it happens all the time and the resulting lack of intake air is killing mpg. your never going to know unless you disconnect that tube is a quick way to check.
a mama hello where did you all go? hello omg just fished two plastic shopping bags out of the oem hose down near the fender liner
"slightly warmer" air in the intake is good ONLY if the outside temp is maybe below ZERO F. And a LOT of "older cars" had an intake branch to the manifold.......which was only open when the engine was COLD. Performance tuners go to a LOT of trouble to keep hot air OUT of the intake.
so the intake sucked up some shopping bags? I suppose that would affect performance, I doubt your mod did anything. I have a CAI on my car; it might, just maybe, have helped throttle response. or it could be the placebo effect. that tube going to the exhaust manifold was a "choke stove" which was to help warm-up on carbureted engines. under certain conditions, a carb would literally ice up, and might flood.
