Check Hybrid System

    I get in my car to go to work today and find a check Hybrid system message. The lights, radio, and A/C turn on. I looked under my hood and I saw one wire In my wiring harness broken. Would this be the cause? Can I fix this myself? If not then is this cover under the warranty? It's under 65000 miles.     Splice the wire back together and see what happens... Any idea of what might of caused it in the first place? Moments like this is why keeping a clean car is so important. You notice stuff like this when you're cleaning. Hope it's not rodents doing this. I've had issues with a squirrel sitting on top of the engine in Winter to stay warm, but no wire chewing, just poop.

    Good eye for finding that !!

    That looks like a PITA to fix. My gorilla hands would have about a zero chance of working on that..............

    I hope there's a bit of slack in that for you.

    Odd that one wire would bust off like that; someone doing a mod??

    I would connect a new piece of wire, same colour and gauge, to the pin in the connector, crimp and maybe solder for good measure. Peal back the tape and conduit shield for a few inches, slip a shrink tube piece on, do a soldered butt connection, slip the shrink tube on and heat it down, replace and tape the conduit shield (hide/protect the splice).

    Plug the connector back in, and cross your fingers.

    maybe. a check hybrid system can also be a dirty cooling fan or clogged intake grille.

    that's the usual result of this message. I'd check there before "splicing" wires that are still under warranty...

    "Check Hybrid System" lights up for everything under the sun. A broken wire at a connector, especially if there's the same wire broken off in a connector's pin: that's a smoking gun. But yeah, if it's warrantied, have a dealership look it over first.

    Even still, it's much easier to clean a vent than try to replace or splice in a wire.

    I'm with Ztanos, check that fan intake under the drivers side rear seat. As for fixing that wire, I'm with Mendel. Odd it would happen, but if the fan is clean, then give it a shot.

    No way it's a "warranty" thing at it's age (2013 - pushing 65k miles)

    Wires don't just break; sometimes an issue with second hand vehicles: something was pulled off, and the wire stressed to the point of breaking. But what, and why? Hard to say. Check that area for clues? Anything aftermarket? Maybe a block heater install? Or? Anyway:

    Check the connector carefully, see if there's a pin with corresponding wire, broken off. If not, maybe it's by design, a wire that is used in some applications but not others?? But that seems strange.

    And the elephant in the room: if that wire was meant to be connected there, the car is not right with it disconnected.

    When I'm doing diagnosis, it's a huge relief to see a loose, exposed or broken wire... Almost always you fix the wire and you fix the problem. I've never seen so many people freaking out on PriusChat about the the easiest type of fix. A problem like this is a sign of good luck and the end of working on a far more complex diagnostic process. But on PriusChat people are like oh my god, a broken wire. Don't touch it, you could ruin your car because splicing a wire is as hard a rebuilding an engine. Geez... Come on people! It's just a broken wire. Fix it and forget it and get on with your life! This is not rocket science!

    if a patient came in with a complaint, and 9 times out of ten it was a certain thing, and the other was random, would you try the certain thing first, or go looking elsewhere first?

    If so, I'm thinking butt-splice and heat-shrink.
    EDIT: HOWEVER, I wouldn't touch it until I knew how many volts was on it! (or supposed to be on it.)

    The answer is it doesn't go anywhere until you reconnect it... Find the other end, reconnect it and get on with your life... It just doesn't make any sense that 20 posts in we're still talking about this?
