Is there even enough information to say how many X or S owners traded in for the 3? After all, you had to have one in order to be first in line. But, maybe the 2nd or 3rd car in the owner's Fleet was 'only' a leaf or Prius or volt - that got traded in.

Fair point. There are also cases where a prior owner placed a reservation for a family member. I have heard a number of owners that made a reservation for their sibling, parents or kids.
I don’t know if anyone tracks it, but the number of available CPO’s might give us some info.
In my case, I did trade in a Model S.
I suppose you could figure out how many Model 3s had been built when invitations to configure first went out to people who weren’t previous owners. That would give some number to start with.

Of course, the very first orders went to employees. They didn’t necessarily have a Tesla. Most probably didn’t although I am sure a few did.

Ok, the more I try to logic this out the less sure I am.
So I can definately say the number of Tesla vehicles traded in for a 3 is between 3 and 50,000

Coincidence. Prius sales have been dropping for years now, and buyers have been switching from actual cars to SUVs. Then sales are down for the industry overall this year.
BEVs are close to the point of having the same total ownership costs as a comparable ICE vehicle. Yet there isn't a rumor of them offering a BEV outside of China, and their most recent BEV offering here was actually a Tesla conversion.

Props for the battery work, but FCEVs and hybrids need batteries, so this research isn't a guaranteed to be for a BEV.
Your oxen have died probably would have been better for a car forum in hindsight.

There is a fun little card game of Oregon Trail that I've been playing with my niece. A co-op game that is as likely to win as the original.

    And the unemployed retired bored.

Fixed that for you. Boredom can be a major problem for those who are retired, or at least for those around them. ;)

The BBC made an entire series based on that premise, "One Foot in the Grave": One Foot in the Grave (TV Series 1990–2001) - IMDb, great show!

Attached are the results for car sedan sales in July, 2018. The Tesla model 3 ranked #7 in sales for last month with 14,250 sales/deliveries. The top 6 sales were captured by Japanese brands Toyota, Honda, and Nissan. All of these brands top 6 brands should sales decrease from minor to significant with the exception of Sentra which showed a minor increase. Even more encouraging Tesla model 3 was in the top 20 in sales when compared to all vehicle sales including SUVs and pickups. Tesla model 3 numbers will even get better in August as ramp up continues with expected sales/deliveries to hit close to 20K units.

"The Model 3 cracked the top ten list for best-selling passenger cars in the month of July, according to Goodcarbadcar, which analyzes sales data for the automobile industry.

The report said Tesla sold 14,250 Model 3 Sedans in July, with it selling 38,617 year-to-date. That ranks seventh among all passenger car sold in the U.S. last month. The data includes cars delivered, not deposits or reservations for cars. The Model 3 outsold the Ford Mustang, Toyota Prius, and the Hyundai Elantra.

In fact, the car outsold the BMW 3-Series (3,185) and Mercedes-Benz C-Class ( 3,841) combined in the same period.

Tesla noted on its earnings report last week that the Model 3 is already the best-selling premium mid-sized sedan in the U.S., a segment that includes the BMW 3-series, Audi A4, Mercedes C-class, Lexus IS, and Jaguar XE.

The Toyota Corolla was the best selling car in July at 26,754 cars. Meanwhile, the Toyota Camry and Honda Civic were tied for second place with 26,311 vehicles sold. The Honda Accord was third with 24,927 cars sold in July.

Those cars cost significantly less than the $50,000 Model 3 that currently available, so it will be interesting to see where the Model 3 moves in the rankings once the promised $35,000 version hits the market next year."

    not surprising unless you thought:

    1) reservation holders would completely evaporate.

    2) tesla would never produce enough in one month to compete.

the trick will be long term sustainability.

And THAT is where the Model Y and Model P(ickup) come in. As more and more car makers jump into the BEV market, long term sustainability will be assured with even better technology, infrastructure. and consumer acceptance.......all around the world by the need to address climate change. It is the long term sustainability of ICE that has really come into question.

At this point the only thing that can stop Tesla is Tesla itself (production hell, Elon tweets, etc.)

What shocks many is the average price of the five trade-in cars is in the $25k range yet they upgrade to a $50k Tesla. There is a YouTube video that points out how the trade-in cars gives a clue to how large the buying-Tesla market is.

Not really a shock considering many, like me, would have bought the M3 if it had been available 3-4 years ago at $50K. For many many prius owners the 4th gen or PiP was their choice simply because it was the best available at the time.

The breadth of the trade-in’s of such less expensive cars is what I think has many surprised.
Personally, I expected a bigger showing from Mercedes, Audi & Lexus than Honda.

I hope we will continue to get data such as this. It would be fascinating to see stats like this after the $35k version is available for a few months, and again after all the early reservations have been fulfilled.
