What did you do to ur Gen III Prius today????

Driving through Mongolia we saw TONs of Prius' fording rivers, crossing massive mud pits and crossing terrain that other cars were stuck in. Believe it or not the Prius is a pretty good off road vehicle, for a sedan.

One example I caught on video is below. When we came across mud pits too deep for our tiny little Hyundai to risk, we would wait for a few hours for another car to come along and cross, using their path to judge a good area to try our luck. Here's one example. I never saw a Prius stuck or broken down, despite seeing Land Cruisers and other SUVs stuck while the Prius' powered through. They where always moving through whatever came at them at the same steady pace, even in water over the hood. The driver's onviously knew their car could handle the terrain, and it showed. Other cars would stop and size up the situssitu while the Prius would power though. There's a reason the Prius is the car of Mongolia, a land with next to no roads and the ones that exist are so bad you'd wish they were dirt. It's an incredibly robust off road vehicle that costs very little to operate.

Is it as good as a 4x4? No. Is it better than most sedans? I believe absolutely yes.

 

The Cayenne does have some talents esp. on the open roads, we have lots of twists and turns in NZ and it is a delight to drive, just driving around local it can get up to 19 l/100k , cost of 95 is $2.31 a litre = $43 to do 100ks just crazy on my pocket and the environment. The panels were on left and right side down to the passenger rear doors, 4 of them in total, it's obviously lived in the country on loose gravel roads for some time now. I bought online the car sales said it's a Prius, well looked after, no one abuses these cars Has a service history so amazed Toyota did not notice, this would have taken a while to build up I would have thought, the front panels were mildly deformed with the weight.

I like the look of the lights you have, seen some on e-bay, not cheap with the conversion rates! Question - do the aftermarket lights leave a gap, looks like the original have a plastic part that goes under the boot lid, the photos online don't show this? (hope that makes sense)

That little cover on the inside of the boot lid yea? That u take off when u take the oem lamp out. Then u put it on the new lamp. It’s a removable piece, just so water and stuff can’t get into the light sockets and such. Pretty much all aftermarket prius lights r now full LED tho. So u won’t be changing any bulbs. There is lots of choices for taillights, some r expensive, some r not. My smoked valenti’s costed 250 dollars with shipping. There is other lights that hybrid pit stop sells also, they’re a little more expensive. I can give u a list of all the aftermarket taillights thats available. There is quite a lot. Also, does New Zealand also follow the E-certification rule on lights as EU and AU? Valenti is E-certified, DOT certified and SAE certified. So they’re legal world wide, I don’t know how strict ur country is with fog lights in the rear? The valenti’s and some other lights does not have rear fog light. In most EU countries atleast it’s mandatory, here in Norway it’s not so I haven’t installed a fog light in the rear. But if it is mandatory in ur country and u wanna switch to aftermarket taillights u can get some road certified rear fog light strips from hella.com.

 

Thanks for the info appreciate it - I have E11 on the NZ New Prius lamp - the one on E-bay that looks like your image is unbranded for $440 E4 rated. Are they plug & play with no other modifications needed? (the description on e-bay is lacking detail)I'll check to see if we have any regulations

 

Aslong as it says "E" and some kind of number at the end theyre E-certified, the number at the end just specifies in which EU country it was tested and approved.
And they r all plug and play, this is what the connector looks like

Since im planning to add a rear fog light strip from hella im gonna tap into the OEM connector so the OEM button controls the aftermarket light strip.

Does ur prius have a red light spot at the left or right side? like this? If u have that then its most likely mandatory in ur country. Even tho....... Norwegian prius`s also comes with rear fog lights and its not mandatory... So yea, ur gonna have to check ur countries laws.

Did a little tanning today

 

Beyond impressed with how she handled through the canyons today. Perfect amount of oversteer. Now to take it to autocross

 

Flasher module for third brake light. Hidden under plastic trim.

 

How does that work dude? does it flash as soon as u hit the brakes or does it work like the ones in BMWs`where it only flashes when braking hard?

 

Three fast flash, three slow, then on steady. Each time you hit the brake.

 

Damn that’s like nonstop brake flashing with LA traffic

 

Today!

I installed a dash camera today. It's powered by micro-USB; I tucked the cord into the headliner at the windshield edge and over to the A-pillar. Popped the pillar cover off, routed the wire down. I peeled back some of the weather stripping and ran it behind the kick panel.
From here I took the cable and routed it beneath the panel above the pedals (it pops down by undoing two screws)....then took it and tucked it into the gap between the seams for the 'cubby' beneath the shifter area and plugged into cigarette lighter/power outlet.

It works pretty well here, but I think it could be cleaner if I was able to remove the trim surrounding the lower cubby area.
Anybody know how to remove this trim?

Second: kind of weird scenario. I have a '13 Two, so no stock backup camera.
Whoever owned the car previously had an aftermarket one installed and chose to have it display on an aftermarket monitor. For whatever reason, at some point they just cut the wire to the monitor and got rid of it. The wiring was pretty messy, so I just ripped it all out. I wired up a harness for a new camera and tested it - works fine! So tomorrow (hopefully) I'll try and get the camera installed and routed properly.

 

While u r still messing with it, why not install a 360 birdseye view camera? on one in the front, one in the rear and one under each mirror housing.

 

I put fitted CarShades on all the back windows. The windows can be raised and lowered with them in place. This will be nice for more privacy and keep the inside dark when car camping on road trips. It will also keep the bugs out when sleeping in the car with the windows vented. I'm considering getting some window vent shades to keep rain out too, though I don't like the look.

If the black mesh isn't dark enough for sleeping (such as in a lighted parking lot), it should be easy enough to put a black T-shirt or other cloth between the shades and the window. I suppose I can precut some fabric with pockets to hang over the top edges for that purpose too. I didn't want to tint the windows because no tint is better much of the year where I live.

New taillights

 

What did I do today in my Prius - Windows Tinted, unfortunately legal 35% tint that we are allowed in NZ - FM7 with a 75% heat reduction & 99% UV block.

Now I need to order the Smoked VALENTI tail lights (Thanks MagnusAG99 for all the suggestions)

Then Some new Alloy wheels, thinking 17inch as see the Prius can run on 215/45/R17 - I don't want to affect my fuel use, so if you have any suggestions let me know!
