Could just reset the whole system and see what the gauge reads than. If it's in the tank you'll know. Better than running out of gas.

I was at 630 miles when I got home. And about 104 left on the DTE? I will take it to 700 miles and then retire from these MPG games.

    Yikes another long thread.
In California, every grade will have 10% ethanol and also RFG so equal energy content (MPG) all grades (in theory).
    Of course, YMMV.

I just refueled at 700 miles driven exactly. The tank clicked off at 9.8 gallons. That calculates to 71.4 MPG.
But the display above, shows 62.7 MPG. Whatever it is, it was a great ride.

Going for the gusto again. Blame it on Mrs. Max. I think she is getting addicted to the "nitro." :ROFLMAO:

Well as long as it is "safe", I think we as owners have the right and freedom to embrace any ownership behavior, even if the benefits are probably mostly placebo.

I didn't or rarely filled my Prius with anything but regular.
My current vehicle is rated to run on regular.
Same thing, I only full moon, rarely fill with Premium.

But there are "placebo" affect behaviors I think everyone sometimes does embrace.
For decades now, I have run occasional treatments of Techron through my vehicles, 1-3 times a year.
I'm not sure it helps anything really. But it's a old ritual, and if it's ONLY placebo affect? I can live with that.

So in short, if you feel happier running Premium? I certainly wouldn't stop you.
I'm not recommending anyone do so, but if you determine you are happier with performance doing so, and can afford the cost hit? Owners choice.

If there's one thing you can count on in life, it's Toyota's propensity to BS the mpg. Starting with that 62.7 mpg and guesstimating with a 5% BS factor, that'd be 59.6 mpg (62.7*.95). Comparing that to your calculated 71.4, that's a reduction to 83.4% (59.6/71.4*100).

The one way I can see that happening is a very full fill-up with a the high octane Shell, followed by a regular (stop at the first click) fill-up this time? This is somewhat corroborated by the miles per tank. Even then, I do not know: I never see the displayed mpg lower than calculated, and that's quite a difference.

I added .58 cents to round up the price to an even number. An old habit. Same with the last fill up, I think it was something like $.46. And I do that on every fill up. I wouldn't consider that a major overfill.

And my ICE is definitely quieter and smoother. Other people may not notice any difference at all, but after 700 miles (and 2.5 years) I noticed reduced engine sound in my car. So now I am curious again, to see if I can repeat this performance with another tank full of Shell premium... it was only about $3.70 extra for the tank?

Anyway, it's just a fun little experiment. I'm bored..... I am going back to the gas casino!

Ok, not significant. Strange though, that the displayed mpg is much lower, something amiss. Stay outa casinos, lol.

Thanks Mendel. Do you think.... I really didn't drive 700 miles? Something amiss with the car!s computer? If you ask my back, and my bottom, it sure feels like I did that much. And I am positive I zeroed out the Trip A and Trip B after the last fill-up. I doubled checked. And both show the same numbers (700 / 62).

Strange, yes. Hopefully I will know more after I burn through this next 9 gallons of Nitro. I'm guessing everything will go back to normal. Thanks to all. :) Take care.

Yeah 700 miles is 700 miles. Intriguing... (in Spock voice).

Maybe the pump shut off early on that last fill up? Calculate the next one: if it's oddly low that would point to that.

I suspect it was a computer glitch - the one which detects that the tank is full. I'm not sure how it does it, but I suspect it's not an accurate method. Could be a one off - the time it did something similar for me was a one off - but wasn't as pronounced.

This is my second tank with the Shell premium nitro. The mpg display seems to have gone back to normal. So I believe that first tank was a quirk, a glitch, an anomaly. So I don't really know if I actually drove 700 miles? Or 400 miles? Or somewhere in between! Just another Prius Oddity!

The ICE does seem to be quieter and smoother, I'll give it that. But I think I will go back to burning the cheap stuff… The 87 octane from Jim and Pete's Bait & Tackle shop. :ROFLMAO:

    End of thread! :)
