    I reset "B" when I fill the tank. So we're looking at ~2,000 mi for 2/3 tank.

    Adding hill climb metric for Brindley Mountain:

    ACTUAL PROTOCOL
    • Use Brindley Mountain hill climb route:
      • 525 ft (160 m)
      • 1.1 mile (1.76 km) run
      • 8% grade
      • 55 mph (88 kph) ascend speed, replicating typical truck performance
      • 65 mph (104 kph) descent speed, replicating typical truck performance
      • includes acceleration at base; turn around at top, and; deceleration to stop
      • 82F (28C)
    • Reset trip meter at start and record:
      • round trip distance
      • mi/kWh (may be a problem for Prime as I need to find the trip value display)
    • Metrics
      • Use dash cam to record trips
      • Use GPS to track speed and route
    DATA

    2017 Prius Prime in EV mode:
    longitude latitude miles kWh speed
    1 34.65289 -86.57163 0.0 0.00 0 mph
    2 34.53006 -86.58991 9.0 2.14 55 mph
    3 34.50485 -86.60262 2.4 1.42 55 mph
    4 34.53334 -86.58965 2.2 -0.25 65 mph
    5 34.59196 -86.56261 4.4 0.60 55 mph

    • Earlier benchmarks showed 5.6 kWh of usable battery capacity
    • Going up the hill, 2.4 mi (3.8 km), the Prime EV used 1.42 kWh
      • includes first half of U-turn
      • ~2070 ft (631 m) maximum EV hill climb at 55 mph from 100% SOC
      • ~1656 ft (505 m) maximum EV hill climb at 55 mphfrom 80% SOC
        • the engine can CHARGE to 80%
    • Descending the hill, 2.2 mi (3.5 km), the Prime EV gained 0.25 kWh
      • may have been stopped ~0.2 mi (0.3 km) early

    With an outside temperature of 95F (35C) and connected to our JuiceBox 40 Pro, I used the key fob to initiate cooling. Because of the heat and parked in the sunlight, I did several:
    [IMG]

    So looking at the first event:
    [IMG]
    One feature of the data graph is the ability to read out the time, power, and cumulative kWh:
    time kW
    1 15:30:00 0.00
    2 15:32:47 0.00
    3 15:32:59 3.45
    4 15:38:29 3.45
    5 15:38:37 0.00
    6 15:40:06 0.00
    7 15:40:12 3.30
    8 15:40:18 3.64
    9 15:40:36 3.25
    10 15:41:40 0.80
    11 15:49:33 0.80
    12 15:49:41 0.00
    13 16:00:00 0.00

    • Initial charge suggests a combination of battery charge and A/C load.
    • Charging from the JuiceBox stops for about a minute and a half.
    • There is second surge that within a minute drops to 0.8 kW.
    • Total cooling interval drawing from the JuiceBox is 17 minutes.
    Speculation, I suspect the A/C in temperature sustaining mode runs about 800 watts.

    they dealer had the paperwork done on my car before I even got to test drive it. It was the only one on their lot. It was sitting in the showroom, and the batteries were completely DEAD. It took them a while just to get it to start. Forget the traction battery.

    I did charge it when I got home and began enjoying the 100% EV mode the next day. Boo Yah!

    After six weeks, I had barely used more than a couple of gallons of gas. So I stopped charging it for a month until my gas was down to the 2nd bar. Now put in 2 gallons every few weeks. It's perfect for me living 7 miles from work!

    Surmising it was the 12 volt battery they were struggling with: did they replace that 12 volt?

    If not, you should have documentation showing that the battery was dead and needed charging, when you bought it.

    Dealers either don’t know or don’t care about the state of either battery. They will leave the fob in the car,
    never check state of charge in either battery. or fob. The over all health is never determined before the purchase.

    in all fairness, they like selling gassers which have no maintenance or knowledge requirements.

    HVs and PHVs require thinking, in all fairness it’s not thier fault. It’s the owner of the dealership.

    If they needed to charge the 12 volt battery, you should insist they replace it with a new one.

    A user here (@Mendel Leisk ?) bought his Prius in similar circumstances and had them replace the 12 volt battery. It has been fine for years since.

    They just charged it up enough to get the jump start to work, then drove it a few miles. I don't care. I got an extended warranty that should cover it. Either way, I'm not worried. Here in Phoenix, most folks say you're lucky if your battery lasts more than 2 or 3 summers. I've had a lot better luck than that on all the cars I've owned, but hey ... if it dies this summer (my first), then I'll make sure they replace it at no cost.

    In the recent heat wave, I've been using the BMW i3-REx more than the Prime. The liquid battery cooling is more efficient as well as the cabin conditioning. Also, I'm doing more, longer errand runs.

    I'll switch back this week and we'll see how it goes.

    Discharged the battery, 25 miles, and ran the engine for ~12 miles. Put the car on the Jucebox Pro 40:

    Temperature 83F (28C). Total miles ~12,000 mi and bought in Dec 2016.

    The recent drop from 6.3 to 5.9 kWh in hot weather has me wondering what is going on. So I did a 'cold soak in the summer' where the car was parked but not plugged in until dawn the next morning:
    [IMG]
    • 24.2 mi ~= ( 17.2 mi / 71% ) * 100% :: Estimated EV range for 100% SOC
    [IMG]
    • 27.3 mi ~= 17.2 + 10.1 :: without AC
    • 26.5 mi ~= 17.2 + 9.3 :: with AC
    [IMG]
    • 6.1 kWh ~= (4.3 / 71) * 100 :: projected battery kWh
    So not unexpected, letting the battery cool overnight allows more charge. This suggest TOD charging to coincide with dawn in high heat areas makes sense to put in the maximum charge. So far, the battery range remains about 25 mi., fully meeting the EPA spec.

    More high temperature tests are planned.

    [IMG]
    • 28.8 mi = 30 mi * 96% :: range still looks good
    • 75F (24C)
    [IMG]
    • 1408 W ~= 5.7 A * 247 VAC
    • 1440 W ~= 12 A * 120 VAC

    Hi Bob, I recently started charging around 0300 again. My range is now 37mpg. I believe that the increasing
    range was helped by rebooting.

    The data indicates the battery capacity is now ~5.9-6.0 kWh. Mitigations:
    • charge at coolest time of day, typically at dawn
    • charge at slowest rate
    I'll have to wait to Fall to try temperatures in the 50F range.
