For the longest time, I graphed the number of fuel efficient cars sold each month and saw three bands:
    • Prius hatchback - 2-3 times the next highest, efficient car sales. I had to use the secondary Y-axis to share it's trend line with all of the others on the other Y-axis
    • market leaders - +2,500 units per month, usually about 5-8 models
    • we're not dead, yet - <2,200 units per month the rest, low volume
Example, the monthly top sales leaders:

    1. Prius hatchback uses the right-hand, Y-axis scale because it so dominated the efficient car market.
    2. Middle group above 2,500 sales per month tended to rarely cross but clustered together.
    3. Not dead yet below 2,200 sales per month were a more dynamic group that often saw trend lines cross and change. These were often 'halo' models that manufacturers seemed to tout as 'we like efficient cars too', more fig-leaf than seriously in the market.
Over the years I've seen a lot of electric trucks announced with just one or two handcrafted examples for press photos. Volume production never really shows up (aka., Via Motors.) But the German Postal Service finally contracted building their own electric postal trucks because the German car makers would not offer them. Just the Tesla trucks are different.

Tesla starting from bare walls and empty lots has:
    • SpaceX
    • Tesla Motors
    • Tesla Grid Batteries
So I see Tesla taking a bite out market share and the others 'getting a clue.'

Patents and trade secrets are completely different things. You patent something to protect it and possibly license it and possibly protect your company against someone else who might patent it if you don't.
Trade secrets are something that you don't want to share publicly via a patent.
You protect them by keeping them secret within the company...such as the formula for Coke.
Or in Tesla's case it might be some internal process on how they ramp production so quickly. :)

Generally, for complex things, the info in a patent is enough to say what you are patenting to someone skilled in the art...but not enough to actually implement it. For example, if the patent included software or firmware you might have a block diagram of how it works but you wouldn't include the source code.

That map says those installs will be done by june .... a time frame which ends exactly in a year. I guess they better start pulling permits.
