Featured Hyundai IONIQ - Prius competitor?

    It likely has a lot to do with weight, too. At 6'-5" i look light, but weigh 225. So probably >150Lbs on the seated part. That puts a decent strain on the Lexus hybrid SUV leather - especially at the 10-year mark.

    I had to get my slide-rule out to convert 225lbs - but I can picture 6'5". Funny, when we went metric 40 yrs ago, some areas took a long time to convert from feet/inches, but the lbs (pints and gallons too) got dropped out of understanding quickly. If I talk to a Millennial in pounds - they think of UK currency and look puzzled, but ask them for ½ an inch, and they'll know what I'm talking about.

    Back to seats - yes, tall, short, slight or not-so slight - our stature makes a huge bearing on whether seats are good or not. Not sure which of my cars, but had a taller friend sit in it and he said the lumbar support adjustment was in totally the wrong position for him, but it suited me fairly well.

    The lumber adjustment on PRIUS is OK - personally I'd probably want a little more if I were driving long distances - the seats will never make the "best car seats" award.

    There is no "one size fits all" - I lost a lot of weight back 5 or 6 yrs ago (intentionally, not careless) - but before that, when I was carrying much too much weight, I sat in a Golf GTI seat - and the side bolsters meant I just didn't fit comfortably!! But my brother, taller than me but similar weight bought one and he fitted fine.

    math on a stick. My wife's dad taught her (an EE that helped developed H bomb electronics) - & my dad taught it to me. (Hughes aircraft electronics guy) The late 60's saw its demise. Slide rule humor;

    I've lost mine - but still have a book of Logarithmic Tables. So long since I used them (at least 40 years) I'd have to check the instructions on how to use them - which won't be happening, I've retired now.

    Last time they were looked at, my son was having trouble with his Senior School Maths (about 20 yrs ago) and I tossed the book to him. He had no idea what they were - I showed him how easy they were to use. His comment was priceless - something like "why did they make them instead of using pocket calculators?"

    Whilst applauding the wizardry of the slide rule, have you ever seen those clips of Chinese super-fast abacus operators? The speed of their calculating simply blows your mind!

    Note that their recommendation is of the Ioniq plug-in, not the more conventional model. This is a very odd story; they seem to be comparing each company's offerings against the other offerings of that company as much as they are comparing between one company and another. (Note, for instance, their statement about the Toyota Prius)

    The Ioniq Hybrid is definitely on my potential Prius replacement list for 2019 and all other motoring mags seem to put it ahead of the BEV and Plug-in variants. This could be the exception awardaward serves to prove the rule.

    that's what got me, they picked the ioniq plugin, the mini plugin but then picked the prius hybrid, not the plug in??? no reason either?

    I don't think there is one clear winner between the ioniq or prius, it mainly comes down to preference in DCT / eCVT gearbox, and the cabin design

    in my mind anything which promotes the makers having to up their game and give us better vehicles is good for us all, competition is good

    as to which is best, here it will always be the prius, and on the dark side it will be the ioniq, so long as we respect each other and have a good debate all is good :)

    Same here - PRIUS has no PHEV (here), and even if it did, it's a niche 4 seater where the "norm" is 5 seaters.

    1. We can't figure out how to sell to ordinary car buyers so we're here to cannibalize Prius owners.
    2. Prius owners need a hybrid that looks, sounds, and feels like the gasser they left behind.
    3. Here is a hybrid that gets great EPA metrics but per Fuelly users are getting 10% worse.
    4. One body style and three drive trains, how hard could it be? (OPPS almost forgot the SUV.)
    5. Quite affordable because no one would start a trade war or surrender a faithful ally to N. Korea.

    Too little too late with the Ioniq (hybrid, plug-in, and BEV).

    They still have a good chance for redemption with the Kona Electric "coming this fall"

    as I have said before the interesting point will be in about 18-24 months when the first batch of Ioniq look to replace them

    will they

    a: stick with hybrid / plugin / EV or go back to a gasser?

    b: will they move further up the chain to a plugin or full EV?

    C: will they stick with Hyundai or look at and buy from any of the other brands producing hybrids etc.

    I must admit most of the new member on the dark side are first time hybrid buyers, we are not getting as many ex prius owners as we did about a year ago, which for me is good as it means more first timer hybrid buyers rather than getting the already converted

    And I throughly agree. Converting gassers to hybrids and plug-ins is the way to go. That is how we expand market share and apply a 'clue by four' to traditional manufacturers and eventually dealers.
