I'm not gonna dig out the UK service schedule for you, Mendel, but rotation isn't called for.

Lucifer, that's what I meant. USA dealers get paid for the rotation via Toyota - so you'll be paying Toyota for that in the purchase price. There's no such thing as a free lunch.

BTW, the UK's Automobile Association conducted a study and found that there was no real value in rotating tyres for better longevity. Their conclusion was that with minor variations between front and rear wheel drive vehicles, the driven wheels did wear sooner, but the non-driven wheels lasted much longer (particularly if they were back wheels). On balance, no pun intended, there was negligible advantage to be gained from rotation of tyres.

    Hello Crusing the Coast!
Regarding my 2015 Prius, I have rotated my own tires, front to back since I purchased it new in August of 2015. I have just under 35k miles on my car. Over my driving career, I noticed if one rotates tires and it results in a reverse tread, it does cause some noise, as well as a short life for the tires. That has been my experience. Can't explain it, but it has happened to me.

I started rotating my own tires due to the "overtightening nutters" at your local tire shop/dealerships. Even if you ask them not to, out of habit, they still do it.

The way I do it is to park car on a level surface, take a breaker bar and losen all 4 wheels PRIOR to jacking up the car. I chalk the side that I will not be lifting first. Then I lift the first side. I use a regular power drill with the correct size socket to remove the bolts. I move the tires, then center the tires on each hub so the bolts seat in good, tigthten all the way to the specified torque, drop car and proceed to the next side repeating my steps. Takes me 15 minutes.

Unless you have a mechanic/dealership you have been dealing with for years, it is worth the effort to try oil changes and tire rotations on your own. Or, if you can't, maybe you have a family member, friend or aquaintance who you could invite over and reward with good old fashioned grilled cooking as the reward!

I totally get it if this doesn't work for you. Not everyone is savvy enough to do certain things or has anyone who can help them. So please, do what works for you! No offense to you!

I was screaming thru Orange County this morning, on the 405 Freeway South. Ripping along at 63 MPH in the slow lane. OLD MAN DRIVING! ;) Everyone passing me doing 75 to 80! They can't even slow down a bit on an early Sunday morning.

My Gen4 has been great for 2 years. Excellent. I've only had one complaint, and one complaint only... since DAY ONE. The road noise in the cabin drives me nuts! Regardless of tire brand, that Prius is just not a quiet car. I know others disagree, but in MY Prius the road noise and wind noise at any speeds over 55? is almost unbearable. On rough roads, and certain kinds of pavement, any speed over 40 is very unpleasant! The constant noise just spoils the drive. Gives me a headache. If I was still working, I could not drive that car on a long daily commute. :(

They say the Gen 4 had very little did proofing in order to reduce weight for best figures. I find the road surface is the generator of most noise inside the car.

agreed. and if this is your first prius, road noise complaint is understandable. i can't hear it after 14 years, but then, i can't hear anything.

Maybe the moderator can please change my username to: "GoneFishing." I'm retired, and not doing much driving these days. Just short local trips. The Prius is perfect for that. ;)

It is still a great car. Many more positives than negatives. A simple pair of earplugs will solve my noise problem. (y) Who needs XM radio anyway? :ROFLMAO:

Hmm. Took an 06 model 9 to a body shop once, a year later I realized it didn’t come back with heated mirrors.(it went in with them)
Some are unscrupulous enough to take your better part, is it possible someone switched you out for a set with more miles. ???

My brain feels full, looking at that, can't understand the ramifications of one vs the other.

One plus to following owners Manual is two of your rims tend to stay pristine, no curb rash.

in all those cases, don't at least two of the wheels reverse direction?

I'm pretty convinced I know what you need.

When I rotated my high-mileage (meaning harder rubber) Michelins, they downright HOWLED at me, and for a long time. Eventually, the noise went away. I quickly realized that sound was tread life I was chewing up as they worked to settle into their new pattern. And the tires didn't last nearly as long as I was told they would.

I expect the longer you wait between rotations, the louder they'll scream. Maybe they should be rotated every 500 miles, but I'm not convinced.

I will probably never rotate my tires again. I suppose there may have been a time when rotations lengthened the tread life, but I'm not convinced it's still true. Cars are designed and built much better than they were 50 years ago. I'll have the tire store check them for unusual wear (which I expect was the original reason for rotating tires), but if they're running smooth, I'll leave them alone.

If it ain't fix, don't broke it. Just leave them alone, have them checked once in a while, and don't do anything stupid. I believe the same rule applies when a car has multiple drivers; everything wears out twice as fast because nothing can ever wear into a comfortable place.

I've been studying those patterns. Bisco is correct. :) If the tire shop did pattern #C, the standard rotation for a front-wheel drive car, then that means my rear tires are now moved to the front axel and are running in the reverse direction. (Which probably is causing the new noise?)

To get everything back to normal, I would actually have to rotate them back using the #A pattern. I think!? I got a headache.

In pattern #B, the X pattern, I believe all 4 tires would now be rolling in the reverse direction.

(I'm about ready to buy a bicycle!)
