A quart/liter burned every 1,200 miles is excessive in the real world.

    From the 2010 Owner's Manual:
    Engine oil consumption
The amount of engine oil consumed depends on the oil viscosity, the quality of the oil and the way the vehicle is driven.
More oil is consumed under driving conditions such as high speeds, frequent acceleration and deceleration.
A new engine consumes more oil.
When judging the amount of oil consumption, keep in mind that the oil may have become diluted, making it difficult to judge the true level accurately.
    Oil consumption: Max.1.1qt./600miles, 0.9Imp.qt./600miles (1.0L per 1000 km).
If the vehicle consumes more than 1.1 qt. (1.0 L, 0.9 Imp.qt.) every 600 miles (1000 km), contact your Toyota dealer.

Sorry...I said "real world"...not that crap Toyota Corporate Lawyers came up with. 1.1 quarts per 600 miles means the motor is already history. Recycle, replace or overhaul.

I have been so upset aboout my "dying " prius. I am encluding the diagnostic report by the Toyota dealership in my town. I've had a corolla, a camry and finally the almighty prius....I am still paying off the loan as my car dies....Its barely giving me 30-32 mpgs.....my dearler says to just keep putting oil in it but I fear for the catalitic converter failing.....I am trying to get help from corp but they just dont care.

They also advised me not to use any other oil but the recommended synthetic.
And if you want to test if your car is burning oil, just swipe the inside of your tailpipe....mine was coated in thick black sludge.

30 mpg is poor, but not usually caused by oil consumption. don't let this dealer take you for a ride.

FYI: I have a 2009 Prius that started sucking up oil a year and a half ago. I have 250K miles on it. Is there a concensuson oil recommendation?

Just keep an eye on the oil level and make sure it doesn't run low. Drive it until it dies

My 2011 Prius, which I have owned since new and was always maintained by the dealer, suddenly started burning oil at around 110-120,000 miles. I never had to check the oil level, not once. It was always fine and I would have it serviced as they recommended, anytime from 5000 to 10000 miles. Then last summer on a hot week I suddenly had the oil light go on only a few thousand miles after a change.

The dealership is topping off the (synth) oil as often as I want in between changes. It's going to the bottom of the dip stick about every 1000 miles. They are about to do a formal burn-rate test (mark the level, let me drive, mark again.)

I have been informed that the exact same engine is subject to recall on one or more other Toyota vehicles, but not the Prius. :(

How does a catch can stop or slow oil consumption?

Maybe replacing PCV valve? I have a 2010 and it seems to barely burn any oil at 165,000 miles. I haven't done too much maintenance on it, but maybe just lucky? Might replace my PCV valve, but I don't know if I should fix what is not broken.. I have also been using synthetic oil for it's life, mainly Mobil 1.

Replacing the PCV valve won't prevent it barfing into the intake manifold though. That's where an oil catch can comes in. This is what I've drained from ours, in 3700 kms:
