My dog is well-behaved in the back seat of my 2017 Prius Prime Advance.
An netted hammock from Orvis covers the back seat easily and doesn't block the vents.

My concern is mainly about reducing sun heat and increasing air conditioning in the back seat....
    Any suggestions?

I have the same situation with my dog (hammock in the back seat.) My only tip is that you can leave your dog in the car locked with the AC on, but if you try to lock the car with the fob when the car is on it won't work, so you have to use the actual door key to manually lock the doors. Also, when your dog is in the back be sure to lock the windows! My dog has figured out how to put the window down, which was really scary at 50mph.

At least the dog has not picked up on your driving skills...(that you know of...check the mileage each morning to make sure the dog is not joy riding).

My son always travels with his small dogs in tethered crates for the safety of all involved. Since he sometimes goes to outdoor agility trials with his dogs, he ordered his Prius v with remote start. That lets him leave the car locked in READY mode with the AC running when needed.

I believe many areas now assume pets or children left alone in a locked car are suffering and being abused. Be very, very careful!

Make sure your dog’s coat matches interior color.

While it is not my place to judge you or your son, I wouldn't count on technology, like Prius the remote A/C feature, saving a dog or a child that was left alone in a locked car.

He uses it at events where others leave their covered hatches open with battery powered fans blowing on their dogs. Remote start with AC is a better option.

There are solar powered fans for car windows that cost about $15 to $45.

Hi I have a 40lbs dog and wondering how the center part in the back seat is for dogs. I haven't looked at the car yet. Does it make the seat much smaller? Is there any way to remove the centerpiece?

Only reading your post now. I have a 55# yellow lab who loves to ride in her back seat hammock. To keep the side sunshine off of heri installed static cling sunshades to the rear seats. It really works great.
