The Prolong equipment takes the battery to levels outside what the toyota software will;).

This allows for losing any “memory” the modules have and get them all back to similar states:).

If you find someone in your geographic area that you can share the charger and Discharger with, the initial investment is lower;).

Good luck and keep us posted (y).

Like Ray said the outboard charger/discharger goes nowhere close to full charge or full depletion. The cars software does not allow it..
Doesn't get close to fully depleted or 100% charged. A constant full charge on the battery is very stressful and a full depletion would be deadly to the car. Its all about battery internal heat.

There's a 20% no mans land on both full charge and full depletion. What your seeing on the mfd when its all green is its 80% charged when it shows the battery very low like one purple bar there's like 20% left in the battery.

Keeping the battery in this zone is very safe and gives it a very long life.

The Prolong in charge gives it a full 100% or close to it charge under very controlled circumstances which are low charge current (350mA) over a long period of time (24 hours) and with the car's hybrid fan forced on high. You can discharge it to close to empty using light bulbs as loads or the new prolong is an electronic charger & load with built in timers for the charge/load routines.

This out of bounds routine from almost completely empty to 100% full really wakes the battery up and rejuvenates the cells.

It works. Length of rejuvenation time YMMV.

    Ray

Where in Florida are you located?

Sharing with another member can lower the cost of ownership:).

I share the charger and Discharger woth another member out here ;).

Just one option to consider (y).

Florida is a pretty big place. But if you're in the Tampa area, I think Home - Tampa Hybrids Inc. does grid charges. At least he used to. He can also advise you on other options that are better than a rebuilt and cheaper than new.

That almost sounds close to @jerrymildred land:).

He has a Prolong setup ;).

Not sure what his plans are for it after installing a “newish” battery into his wife’s Prius .

Good luck and keep us posted (y).

I’ve loaned ours out before to a member who rebuilt his pack about 6 months ago:).

If doing a 2 cycle reconditioning process, plan on about 3 days;).

Here’s a link to my Prolong reconditioning thread:

2010 Prius II HV Battery Reconditioning

If you talk nice to @jerrymildred , maybe you can work something out(y).

A three-day weekend is best. Too bad we're already so far into this one. But you'd need to get and install the cable before starting. Here's the link to Prolong's discharge ready wiring harness. Prolong® Battery Systems Car Harness - Discharge Ready – Hybrid Automotive

If you want to get that, I can loan you our charger. I have the old, original version and the manual, lightbulb discharger. The discharger takes careful babysitting, so it's a bit of a pita, but it was all they had in early 2015 when I got mine. You're welcome to use that, too. You'll need to have two 25W bulbs, two 75 watt bulbs, and two 200 watt bulbs.

As for plans, @Raytheeagle, I'll keep it as long as we have a car I can use it on. I'm thinking about doing the first grid charge fairly soon on the wife's "new" battery (It's from a totaled 2015, if you recall.). It's running great, but I may just do a top end charge.

Sounds like a good plan for the wife’s “newish” battery;).

Since you might be in the sharing business, maybe you can upgrade your Discharger .

The cost would be half of what it would normally be:).

But since @edthefox5 is in the same general area, maybe he’d be in too and the costs would be a third of normal for just the Discharger ;).

Oh the possibilities. Have a great Memorial Day weekend (y).

True, but I've never been a fan of dual ownership of tools. It can get complicated when there are scheduling conflicts or breakage. For the same reason, I don't mind lending, but I'm leery of borrowing. If I break someone else's tool, I feel obliged to replace it. Then I've bought something and it isn't mine.

Not criticizing those who feel differently, but I just feel uncomfortable in those situations. (y)

    Valid point;).

I look at it this way:

    • If someone is an owner versus a “renter”, there is higher sense of ownership
    • The Prolong equipment is designed well and there is little human interactions with the Intelligent Discharger and the charger (little I or someone else could do to physically damage it)
    • If damage happens and I am at the wheel, I will replace it (no difference if it were in other hands)
    • It sits on the shelf for long periods of time otherwise (I use the Discharger once a year and the charger twice a year)
    • If I can help someone else (as long as they respect the tool and the relationship), I do it
But appreciate your position and concern (y).

Likewise! (y) I think, if the dual ownership works for anyone, they should go for it. Same with borrowing/lending. I'm just happier lending than borrowing.

HA! You sound like me. I sure do have a pile of tools as a result. And the only tool I EVER sold (a carpet stretcher I thought I'd never need) I wound up wishing a year later that I hadn't sold it because a friend could have used it.
