Today after 1800 miles and 4 months of not using a gas station, I pulled into Costco and attempted to fill with 2 bars remaining. I pushed the fuel filler door switch, which opened the fuel door and after inserting nozzle it failed to allow fuel into the tank. After several attempts it splashed back fuel on the car and me. I noticed the sticker on the inside of the fuel door, which states to fill within 30 minutes of opening the fuel door, or push the door switch again in the car. I did not have the splashguard on the nozzle anywhere near the black plastic fuel door lock in the filler compartment. Anyone else have experienced this situation?
No, but these cars really don't like fuel (gas). I'll let you know in another 2500 miles when I have to fill up again....possibly.
Don't feel bad, the Gen 2 Prius was notorious for belching sometimes as much as a quart of gas back onto drivers from its bladder/tank. We solved the splash back problem .... no more gas tank (except emergency generator ... but it runs on piped-in natural gas - so the tank is usually empty ) .
At least your prime doesn't wanna be gassy Try somewhere else then Costco gas. Their stations for some reason seems different to me... I pump up at Costco gas and it works though. TRY TURNING ON THE ICE BY HOLDING THE HV EV BUTTON
There is a valve in the filling line. It is opened for a specific time when triggered by opening the fuel door. The car must be "off". Follow the instructions and you should have no problems. If you follow the instructions and it still won't fuel take it to the dealer. Some of the valves have failed in the past.
I remember this issue being discussed elsewhere. There might actually be a problem with that fill line valve not always opening, and a dealer visit is needed.
Update, next day went to another gas station. No issues. Either faulty Costco nozzle or operator error, which is unknown. Regardless, no issues filling to full now. Just keep in mind, make sure you fully depress the fuel filler door switch in the cabin (audible clunk), and don't touch the black locking mechanism in the fuel door filler compartment with anything. Fair warning or get doused with gas.
I filled my Gen 2 at several Costcos for 12 years. Their pumps deliver at a higher pressure than other companies and the Prius bladder tank really pushes back. It takes some real patience to get the last 2.5 gallons in, often under scrutiny of the attendant who doesn’t understand what’s happening. I was hoping that the Prime would have a plastic tank. I pick up my Prime in a couple of days.
Huh...I had a gen 2 for 150,000 miles and now a Prime for 25,000 miles, and I've never spilled a drop.
I had my 2017 Prime burp back gas at me one time. I couldn't get any gas in there. Then I read up on it and found out that if you accidentally touch the black plastic latch with the gas filler collar (easy to do with some gas stations' filler heads), it closes the valve. I now make sure to squeeze any plastic shield out of the way of the retention latch as I insert the filler hose and I've never had the problem again.
. If you let the gas pump click off w/out realizing you are still 1 or 2 gallons from absolute full; NO fix for Prius Gas Tank Filling Up Issues | PriusChat then you will never notice what was quite a common phenomena. If this wasn't stupid enough, the bladder didn't go to all countries. The Prius Geyser - The Show - Car Talk Community This link & several of the old Gen 2 PC threads talked about it. Consider yourself lucky. .
