Gas has gone up 30 cents a gallon in my area over the last couple weeks.

    Usable is ~ 5.6 kWh
L2 charging wastes about 12%, so charge to full is 5.6/0.88 = 6.3 kWh from the meter
L1 charging wastes about 18% so charge to full is 5.6/0.82 = 6.8 kWh from the meter

It doesn't do much good to calculate off a personal EV fuel economy because HV fuel economy is likely to change by a similar amount so you might as well use EPA numbers: 25 miles on a full charge, and 52 mpg.

Quick math says we use ~ half a gallon to travel 25 EPA miles = C cents
If your cost to charge a full battery is less than C cents you save money on fuel

    Example:
    $2.80 a gallon, 140 cents for half a gallon
    With L2 charging 140/6.3 = 22 cents a kWh break-even

Gas is up to over $3.48 a gallon at the cheapest Arco around here. Costco isn't really close by me, but I hit it when I can and do save a bit more usually. So my cost for EV miles are much cheaper than gas miles.

Violating the Iran Nuke Deal will push gas prices up at the pump once it starts to take effect.

Our gas price went up about $0.25 in last few weeks. It is now well above a break even point for our electricity rate. With warmer weather, my EV range has gone up above 30 miles. Every time gas price goes up I am saving more.

Gas prices here in PA have gone up about $0.10 in the last few weeks, not as bad as others but we have one of the highest gas taxes in the nation so there is that.

Fortunately electric is running 7 cents per Kwh so there is no question which makes the prime cheaper to operate here. Guess-O-Meter keeps climbing too (37.8 the last few mornings) so I'm looking forward to many EV miles this summer.

Wow, that's absurdly cheap electricity! Is it because of coal production in PA??? I got to move out of NE. EIA - Electricity Data

I'm in North Carolina and it costs me 60 cents to charge the Prime from empty--and gas is $2.65 for regular unleaded. Best of both worlds here in the Carolinas :)

That's cheap but how much after the introductory period. That's how they get you. Like those plans that have free nights. When it's not free it's double or triple the price of other fixed rates. You'll probably pay more to get free nights.

After 2 yrs of this thread it should be evident, the OP's presumption is not correct for all. Even after fees & taxes, & using a LOT of juice, we average $4.16 a month w/ 2 plugins. That $4 # is dropping after adding 4 more panels. The one qualifier - some of the Supercharger use we do is up front cost for juice. The up front costs though (like solar) pay for their self after a few years.

I have a guy coming next week to do a site analysis for PV installation in my current home. I will see what he says, but if my estimation is correct, it will not pay itself in a few years. It's going to be more like 20 years!

How soon it amortizes itself turns on the cost of gas - not just the cost of running the lights and AC in a home . Our panels went in right when gas was over $4 a gallon here in SoCal. So now although our SUV EV is of similar weight to the Range Rover we got rid of 10yrs ago, we don't end up dropping $100 a week just to move it around.

And largely depends on where you live! All new homes in California may soon have solar panels — Quartz

... who will eventually charge someone for all the homes he visited and did not do business with.

You are going about this the expensive way.
