Apparently I am extremely technologically challenged- tried posting something yesterday, but doesn’t seem to have worked... I just wanted to post the quote from the dealership and get advice from the group. Image attached. I just bought this car last September. It was in cherry condition. Do you all think it would run another 100,000 miles with the new battery? Would it do me any good to “shop around”? Is the dealer’s diagnostic definitely true? (From what I’ve read, it seems like the P080 code probably means the battery is finished) I live in upstate New York, and mechanics seem to be generally afraid and skeptical of hybrid’s. If anyone knows of anybody around here let me know please. Thanks for any help you can give!

welcome! most of the rest of the car should do another 100k without any other huge expenses, so i would probably go for it.
My daughter just went through this. 2008 with 125 K, and had all services done at the dealer where she bought it new. She lives in California and the dealer said she needed a new Cat. ($2,500) and new traction battery ($3,000). After negations between the dealer and Toyota, it was no charge to repair. They even picked up the 3 week rental car cost. She does have an oil burner, and I suspect that is what caused the cat to fail. Tests are being done on that as well, but Toyota probably won't do anything on the oil burning issue, but it doesn't hurt to put it on record. If you are on good terms with the dealer, they may be able to help with Toyota on getting a discount for the battery pack.
I have had good luck (so far) with Green Bean Battery. They will bring a refurbished battery to your house and replace it there for a little over $1500. They warranty the battery for 5 years (non-prorated). It's not a new battery, and it probably won't last 5 years - but they will replace it again if they are still in business. All of New York looks like it is in their coverage area. I was back in business in 4 days after the battery failure. Good luck!
Is the cost of the OEM battery really $2,828? If so, that's on the high side and you should shop for a better OEM price. From what I've been reading, you should probably be able to get a quote of under $2k- maybe as low as $1,800. Let us know the best rate if you call around and if you're able to buy it without using that particular dealership for the install.
$2828 is less than what I hear many dealer's are charging. I have never heard of a dealer's standard price to be under $2000. The only time I've heard of a lower price is if somehow Toyota Corporate chipped in some portion of the cost.
If it was for the full job including labor and taxes, I still think it is too much. However, that price is just for the HV battery. I just feel the dealer is profiteering. Total quote for the job is $3304, which I feel is $900 - $1100 too much.
Hello Prius Friends, Just wanted to post an update. I took the car to the dealer- Curry Toyota in Watertown, CT- where I bought it. Contacted the salesman and asked if I could get any type of customer loyalty discount. They took 10% off the price they’d originally quoted me for the part. So the total with labor and tax was $2400. It took a week because the battery had to come all the way from California. They gave me a loaner for the entire time- a 2016 Prius C. Fun to drive and extraordinary gas mileage (over 60 MPG on some trips), but TOO small. Anyway, while a sudden $2400 expense is not fun, overall my experience, so far with the dealer repair has been positive. I talked to Green Bean, and I’m impressed w/ what they do- come to you and install a refurbished battery for about $1000 less than what I paid. However, I chose to go with the new battery because I feel more confident it will last, and also I needed wheels right away and it would have been a few days before GreenBean could make it out to me. $2400 for an new battery from the dealer is a smokin deal. You'll never regret getting new cells vs buying used.
I just had my battery go out at 140K on my 2007. The car is in great shape in every other way so I got a new battery installed at the dealer. That is about what I paid. Very happy with my decision.
Just a follow-up. It's been 2,000 miles and she didn't need to add any oil. there is longer an oil burning issue. . All we can think of the Cat. had something to do with the oil issue. She is very happy
You should keep an eye on the oil still. It might have been over filled initially. Check every 1000 miles The emissions warranty in CA is 15 years 150k miles. The cat was under warranty. No negotiations needed
